African American Choral Ensemble

Joy, sorrow, reflection and celebration - the rich and varied traditions of African American choral music resonate with the complexity of the Black American experience. With 80 or more voices, the Choral Ensemble delivers a broad repertoire of spirituals, fold forms, traditional and contemporary gospel music, and formally composed works by African American artists.

Contemporary Gospel Groups

In recognition of the significance of group vocalizing in the history of Black gospel music, three contemporary gospel groups have formed as subsidiary components of the African American Choral Ensemble: Soul - ACE, a male group; Sojourner, a female group named after abolitionist Sojourner Truth; and God's Progress, a group of young men and women. The groups have opened for legendary performers such as The Blind Boys of Alabama and Ray Charles. Whether singing a cappella or with instrumentalists, the groups are renowned for their stirring, inspired performances.
