American Historical Review

General description of the journal: The American Historical Association publishes the American Historical Review, the major historical journal in the United States. It includes scholarly articles and critical reviews of current publications in all fields of history. Founded in 1884 and chartered by Congress in 1889, its mission is to engage the interests of the entire discipline of history. Accordingly, the journal is always seeking individual manuscripts that have an appeal beyond a particular specialty and an array of articles that address the spatial, temporal, and thematic dimensions of the field. It commissions reviews of books and films determined to be of greatest relevance to professional historians.

Journal location: The editorial office is in Bloomington, Indiana. Advertisements and permissions are handled in the Washington, D.C., office of the AHA (400 A Street SE, 20003).

Publication sequence: Five times a year, an issue of over 400 pages issues from its printer, Cadmus Professional Communications, in Richmond, Virginia.  The numbers are in February, April, June, October, December, with the volume year beginning in February.

Print run: Approximately 18,000 copies, both U.S. and international distribution, go out to individual members of the AHA and institutional subscribers.

Staff size: the editorial office has a staff of 14, including two faculty members from the Department of History at Indiana University.  The Board of Editors includes 12 prominent historians from all fields, who advise the editor, Robert A. Schneider, and serve three-year terms.

Editorial information: Submissions of articles are discussed on p. ii of each journal, guidelines are found on our web site, http: //www.indiana.edu/~ahr/guidearticles.html, or in the February issue.  In 2005, the journal published 29 articles, reviewed 18 films and 911 books.
