  Seminar with Hiroshi Ikeda Shihan
Agnieszka Drobniak's shodan test
Oberlin, OH, May 6-8, 2005.

Agnieszka and I drove to Oberlin for the annual Mayfair Seminar with Ikeda Sensei May 6-8. It was a perfect weekend with blue skies and warm temperatures. Hales Gym was full of light and air, and there was almost enough room to practice.

As always, Ikeda Sensei concentrated on “body connection.” When nage and uke are connected and nage moves his center, even slightly, uke has to move as well. When there is no connection, nage can wiggle like a worm, leaving uke standing there wondering whether to seek medical help for uke. In this seminar, Sensei worked specifically on “touching time.” No, this is not an invitation to fondle your partner—it refers to the moment of contact, when nage has the last chance to influence the contours of the contact before uke controls the direction of the movement.

Agnieszka had a wonderful shodan test on Sunday. She was relaxed, crisp, focused and smooth. Ukes rose to attack with fear in their eyes. Congratulations to her for all her hard work and success. We look forward to David’s test when his knee heals. He hopes to do it soon, because he doesn’t know how long he can stand Agnieszka bossing him around. “Kohai, sweep the mat! Kohai, this tea is cold!”

Seminar with Hiroshi Ikeda Shihan, Louisville, KY
February 25-27, 2005

Aikido of Louisville hosted a three day seminar with Hiroshi Ikeda Shihan from February 25 – 27. Four of the IU Aikido club members attended the event and came away inspired by Sensei’s tremendous teaching. We spoke with Sensei and thanked him for his instruction and told him we are eagerly looking forward to his visit to Bloomington in September when our dojo will host a three day seminar from September 16-18.

Guy Haskell Sensei at Mitsugi Satome
Shihan's dojo in Florida, February 18-20, 2005

It was a perfect weekend with temperatures in the seventies, low humidity and blue skies. The breeze blew through the open walls of the dojo during practice, and the sounds of crickets and birds mingled with the sounds of practice. Sensei was in a contemplative, happy mood and emphasized O-Sensei’s spirit and the connection between aikido and the spirals of nature-the macrocosm of the galaxies, the microcosm of nikyo. Sensei also talked about the ubiquitous centrifugal and centripetal forces that work in harmony to form the glue of the universe, and the expression in the centrifugal and centripetal forces that create iriminage.

I had the special honor of receiving my Godan certificate from Saotome Sensei at his home dojo. Patty Sensei and Saotome Sensei were wonderful hosts to a distinguished group of thirty-two senior yudansha from around the country.

  Seminar with Wendy Whited Sensei
IU Aikido Club, November 14, 2004

Wendy Whited Sensei, 6th Dan and Chief Instructor of Inaka Dojo in Beecher, Illinois, led a seminar at the IU Aikido Club on Sunday November 14, 2004. The seminar attracted many friends of the IU Aikido Club who are aikidoka in places such as Indianapolis, Terre Haute, Fort Wayne, Evansville, as well as members of Inaka Dojo who traveled to Bloomington with Whited Sensei.

Whited Sensei's instruction inspired us all. She led the seminar with tremendous knowledge, enthusiasm and humor, signature characteristics of her teaching. We are honored and grateful that Sensei came to Bloomington and hope she will return soon.

  Farewell to Rob - August 5, 2004

Rob Mcloone, who has served as president of our club for the past year, as well as having been a vital force in the spirit of our club, will be moving away from Bloomington this Saturday. We will miss Rob beyond measure ! We wish him good luck as he moves into the next phase of his life.

30 Years of Oberlin Aikido -
Seminar with Hiroshi Ikeda Sensei
April 30 - May 2, 2004

IU Aikido Club Chief Instructor, Guy Haskell, and five club members traveled to Ohio on Friday April 30 to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the founding of Oberlin Aikikai. The focus of the celebration featured a 3 day seminar lead by Hiroshi Ikeda Shihan of Boulder Aikikai, and as always, Ikeda Sensei was sensational.

Guy Haskell Sensei was Chief Instructor of Oberlin Aikikai for nine years, and as such was asked to participate in a demonstration given by former instructors of that dojo. His demonstration was infused with valuable information and humor, which brought cheers and laughs from the audience. The anniversary banquet and party added to the festive atmosphere and our club members returned to Bloomington with memories of a wonderful seminar.
