Welcome to the Indiana University Department of Anthropology.
Our hope is that these pages will introduce you to the fascinating range
of research and study opportunities our department has to offer, and help
you explore some of the many interests of our faculty and students.
We have recently added a number of faculty members, who add new areas of
research interest and geographical specialization to our department, while
complementing our long-standing faculty strengths in area studies and common
research interests.
We are committed to a holistic approach to anthropology, one which explores
the human condition, past and present, from the perspectives of all four traditional
subfields of anthropology, including archaeology, bioanthropology, linguistic
anthropology, and social-cultural anthropology.
Many of our faculty and students integrate methods and theoretical approaches
from different subfields, and other disciplines, to approach research problems
in innovative ways. And many of our faculty and students pursue the
application of our anthropological research findings in settings outside the
university. We hope you will join us in exploring the many ways in which
the study of Anthropology can make a difference in your life, and the lives
of others.
