Welcome!
Welcome to the Muehlenbein laboratory at Indiana University! We are a group of biological and evolutionary anthropologists interested in a variety of research subjects, including evolutionary endocrinology, ecological immunology, reproductive ecology, human life history evolution, behavioral endocrinology, animal behavior and ecology, evolutionary psychology, infectious disease ecology, and emerging infectious diseases. Please learn more about us by exploring our web site.

From hormones to emerging infectious diseases: new directions in bioanthropology Michael Muehlenbein
Dr. Muehlenbein's research interests are focused on two different areas of study: evolutionary endocrinology and ecology of infectious diseases. The former includes various projects to qualify and quantify immune-endocrine interactions in humans to better understand life history trade-offs between reproduction and survivorship. This includes determination of the metabolic costs of immune activation in our own species. In this presentation he will speak about his contributions to this field in addition to a new project designed to monitor ecosystem health, particularly risk of zoonotic and anthropozoonotic infection transmission in Borneo. This area is characterized by increasing human-wildlife contact due to oil palm plantation encroachment, increased local human population size, and booming ecotourism. Several recent infectious disease outbreaks in the region require active surveillance if we are to understand and prevent further emergence. This seminar should be of interest to people interested in infectious disease, microbiology, environmental health, endocrinology and animal behavior.
Our brand-new laboratory facilities are currently under construction and are due to be completed by January 18, 2009. Check out our progress by clicking here Facilities.
Prospective students:
The lab is always actively recruiting new junior colleagues (graduate students). Please contact Professor Muehlenbein or Ms. Becker for details regarding the program at IU or happenings in the lab.
