Recent Donations to the BFC/A2007Edward Mapp continued to add to his collection at the BFC/A with a donation of five video cassettes, lobby cards from four films, issues from various publications and a first edition copy of Peter Noble's 1948 book The Negro in Films. California Newsreel donated DVD copies of the films Twelve Disciples of Nelson Mandela (2005), This is Nollywood (2007), Ezra (2007), and Forgiveness (2005). donnie l. betts donated DVD copies of his films Music is My Life, Politics My Mistress: The Story of Oscar Brown, Jr. and Dearfield: The Road Less Travelled. The Screen Actors Guild Foundation donated five more DVDs highlighting members of the Screen Actors Guild, including Conversations with S. Epatha Merkerson (2002), Jesse L. Martin (2006), Derek Luke (2006), and Forest Whitaker (2007) as well as Celebrity Master Class with Diahann Carroll (2006). BFC/A director Michael T. Martin brought back a collection of film posters and other ephemera from his trip to FESPACO 2007 in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. Included are posters from a range of films that were entered as well as various brochures, pamphlets, programs, flyers, etc. from the most prominent African film festival. Dr. Martin intends this to be a continuing collection with materials-including books, journals, manifestos, videos, DVDs, films, and more-added from future festivals. Dr. Martin also donated a copy of his 1989 documentary on Nicaragua titled In the Absence of Peace to the BFC/A. 2006Former director Audrey T. McCluskey donated a poster for the documentary Emmanuel's Gift (2005), signed by the subject of the film, Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah. Edward Mapp made a contribution to his collection at the BFC/A of a poster for The Wiz (1978), a VHS cassette of The Joe Louis Story (1953) and various early black film lobby cards and photograph stills. Peter Davis donated a copy of Africa Sings (1936), an early film documenting black South African life, which was recently re-discovered and is now distributed by Villon Films. Filmmaker and creator of the Sisters in Cinema website, Yvonne Welbon, donated two of her films during her April visit to Bloomington: The Taste of Dirt (2002) and Sisters in Cinema (2003). Senegalese filmmaker Joseph Gaļ Ramaka donated a copy of his film Ainsi soit-il (1997). 2005Edward Mapp made a donation to add to The Edward Mapp Collection of two DVDs, photographs, and film publicitiy materials. Michael Martin donated a DVD copy of Gillo Pontecorvo's 1969 film Burn! [aka Queimada]. Filmmaker Keith McQuirter donated a DVD copy of his film Prescription for Time (2005). The Screen Actors Guild Foundation donated copies of their "Conversations" [Andre Braugher (2002), Lisa Gay Hamilton (2002), Djimon Hounsou (2004), Eriq La Salle (2003), Melvin & Mario Van Peebles (2004), Sophie Okonedo (2005), Alfre Woodard (2003), and Terrence Howard (2005)] and "Legacy" [Bill Walker (1991)] series, which highlight member actors and actresses of the Screen Actors Guild. Filmmaker Jessie Maple Patton donated her personal papers and copies of her films to establish the Jessie Maple Collection. Filmmaker S. Torriano Berry donated VHS and Betamax copies of his films as well as a 16mm print of his 1982 film Rich. South African filmmaker Dumisani Phakathi donated VHS copies of three of his films: An Old Wife's Tale (1998), Philip Tabane (2003), and Steps for the Future: Ho Ea Rona (2002). South African filmmaker Akin Omotoso donated a DVD copy of his film Rifle Road (2005). South African filmmaker Jyoti Mistry donated a DVD copy of her film we remember differently (2005). Julia Duany donated a DVD copy of Erica Lee Benson's master's thesis project at Florida State University, The Heart of Southern Sudan (2004). Documentary filmmaker Salem Mekuria donated a VHS copy of her film As I Remember It: A Portrait of Dorothy West (1991) as well as a DVD copy of her film Ye Wonz Maibel [aka Deluge] (1997) during her visit to Bloomington in March 2005. Former professional football player and current filmmaker, John West donated promotional material, a printed screenplay, and a 35mm print of Bar-B-Q (2000), a film which he wrote, directed, produced, and starred in. Also included in the donation were DVD copies of the film To Have and To Hold (2001). Filmmaker Avon Kirkland donated a VHS copy of the re-edit of Simple Justice (2003; original version: 1993). 2004South African filmmaker Akin Omotoso donated a DVD copy of his film God is African (2002). BFC/A Advisory Council member and Indiana University Dean of International Programs, Patrick O'Meara donated a Soul to Soul (1971) on DVD. Stanley Griffith donated two DVDs including Sunday Sinners (1940), The Girl in Room 20 (1946), and Boarding House Blues (1948) as well as twelve 35mm black film trailers. 2003The Minnesota State University, Mankato library donated three 16mm prints: Black Is the Color (1974), Body and Soul, Part 2: Soul (1968), and Clorae and Albie (1976). William Greaves initiated The William Greaves Collection, which will include records, films, writings, and other items that document his life and career. Edward Mapp donated various vintage black cast film advertisements and Close Up in Black: African-American Film Posters from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Kino International donated 35mm prints of The Last of the Blue Devils (1979), Daughters of the Dust (1991), and Boesman and Lena (2000). Filmmaker Carolyn Y. Johnson of Dis/Illusion Film and Video donated both the original (VHS) and short (DVD) versions of her documentary, Juneteenth Community (2000). Filmmaker Bridgett M. Davis donated a VHS copy of her film, Naked Acts (1996). The African Studies Center at Boston University donated various 16mm prints related to African Studies. Edward Mapp donated 62 photograph stills of black films. 2002Edward Mapp added to The Edward Mapp Collection with his donation of 12 video cassettes, including Amazing Grace (1974) and For Love of Ivy (1967), and 32 movie posters, including Ali (2001), Uncle Tom's Cabin (1965), and Black Jesus (1971). S. Torriano Berry donated The 50 Most Influential Black Films: A Celebration of African-American Talent, Determination, and Creativity (2001), a book he co-wrote with his sister, Venise T. Berry. Spike Lee donated 9 movie posters including: Summer of Sam (1999), Bamboozled (2000), Get On the Bus (2 different versions; 1996), 25th Hour (2002), Girl 6(1996), Jim Brown: All American (2002), 4 Little Girls (1997), and He Got Game (1998). Andrew Ingall of The Jewish Museum donated a Bamboozled (2000) movie poster. Booker T. Mattison donated a videocassette containing four of his films: The Gilded Six Bits (1999), Exit 13 (1997), and two music videos. Stanley Griffith donated a 35mm print of Shaft (1971), a 16mm print of Disco 9000 (1977), and four 35mm Scope trailers. 2001FoxStar Productions donated Save the Children(1973) and Wattstax(1973). These documentaries help promote black self-determination through free concerts given by Black performances by Isaac Hayes, The Emotions, and The Staple Singers. Graham Doddard, of Robben Island Museum Mayibuye Archive, University of Western Cape, South Africa, donated a copy of Last Grave of Dimbaza(1974). The film documents the harsh living and working conditions of Blacks and the inequities under apartheid law. 2000TriMark Pictures donated a 35mm print of Kasi Lemmons' Eve's Bayou(1997). Steve Crump, North Carolina independent filmmaker, donated Southern Dials...Soulful Styles (1999). This film documents black radio from the 1940s to the present. Laurel Warbrick-Keay, from the British Film Institute, donated a preview copy of Young Soul Rebels (1991). This film is set during the disco era, depicting two London DJs who introduce "Soul Patrol" into mainstream radio. Andrew Ingall of The Jewish Museum, and producer Sholom Rubinstein donated a 2-inch reel of African-American singer Thelma Oliver (broadcasted in 1965). Edward Mapp, film scholar and author of A Separate Cinema: Fifty Years of Black Cast Posters (1992), inaugurated The Edward Mapp Collection with his donation of 26 movie posters. Included are Anna Lucasta (1958), Black Girl(1973), Great White Hope(1970), Reform School(1939), and Thomasine & Bushrod (1975). Filmmakers James Hatch and Camille Billops donated numerous original "blaxploitation" newspaper clippings, and major motion picture press books. Please visit the articles and advertisements catalog of the Hatch-Billops Collection. Colleen O'Meara, Hype Productions, donated a DVD copy of Afrocentricity(1998-2000). This work is a compilation of film shorts by seven independent African American filmmakers. Sara Bernstein, Executive Assistant, HBO, presented the BFC/A with a VHS copy of Spike Lee's 4 Little Girls(1997). The film documents the infamous 1963 bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. Tina Andrews, writer/producer/actress, donated Sally Hemings: An American Scandal(2000). This CBS TV mini series chronicles the relationship between President Thomas Jefferson and his slave mistress Sally Hemings. 1999Austin Allen donated Claiming Open Spaces (1995) - documents the political and cultural struggles of African Americans' usage of public parks. Alile Sharon Larkin donated Mz. Medusa (1998). Dwight Swanson, archivist of the Alaska Moving Image Preservation Association donated a 16mm print of Richard Hunter-Sculptor (1970)- documents the Chicago area artist's welded metals. Mr. Swanson has also donated an additional, untitled documentary of teens discussing inequality and racism in inner-city school. Burnham Ware donated nine super-8mm films on African-American authors, including Houston Baker, Alex Haley, Terry McMillan, and Gloria Naylor. The footage is from various lectures at Georgetown and Kentucky State. Captain Richard E. Norman added the original script of The Green-Eyed Monster (1920) to the Richard E. Norman Collection, along with a herald page for A Debtor to the Law (all-white cast) and a "Spring and Summer 1929 Catalog" by the Kansas City Slide Company. Carmen Coustaut donated Extra Change(1987) - documents the consequences of peer pressure and low self-esteem of a 12 year old girl. It is from Coustaut's 1972 short story. John Kisch of Separate Cinema Archive, donated seven film posters, including Beloved, Black Jesus, Buck and the Preacher, Coffy, Let's Do It Again, Rosewood, and Soul Food. Bill Aukenbrock donated a 1959 Samuel Goldwyn motion picture production book of Porgy & Bess. The production book includes photographs and an index of the cast, crew, and songs. |
