CURRICULUM
NOTES
COAS/SPEA
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
BSES Core or Concentration requirements will satisfy these general COAS or SPEA distribution requirements.  Since this program spans the two academic units, the total number of distribution requirements is slightly larger than for either unit alone.  The specific requirements reflect those found within most B.S. programs within either academic unit; they will be met through course selection by the student.  Note also that the COAS topics course requirements must also be fulfilled

CMCL C122, C205, C223, C225, C228, C229, Theater T115, and T120 may all be used as alternative courses to satisfy this requirement.

May be filled by selecting any course from the list of approved courses for the COAS A+H distribution requirement see Table of Approved Distribution Courses by Department in the COAS Bulletin.
(0 or 3 credits) Arts and Humanities

Selection of COAS TOPICS course E103 can be used as one of the two courses required to fulfill the COAS A+H distribution requirement.  If E103 is used, then the credits should not be double counted.

(3 credits) COAS TOPICS

Any COAS TOPICS course may be used.  Note that E103 also carries A&H credits (see 2. above).  E104 carries S&H distribution, but the two courses required for the Economics or Political Science and Policy requirements (see 5.and 6. below) also fulfill the COAS S&H distribution requirement.

(3 credits) Economics or
Political Science

One course from the following list must be selected: ECON E201 (Intro to Microeconomics), ECON E202 (Introduction to Macroeconomics), ECON E364 (Environment and Resource Economics), POLS Y103 (Intro to American Politics), POLS Y313 (Environmental Policy).  This will satisfy typical COAS A+H distribution requirements for COAS B.S. degree programs.

(3 credits) Policy

One course from the following list must be selected: SPEA V263 (Public Management), SPEA V371 (Financing Pub. Affairs), SPEA V376 (Law and Pub. Policy), SPEA V449 (Applied Pol. Analysis), SPEA V472 (Policy Processes in the US). This course also serves to satisfy the SPEA Public Affairs distribution requirement for the B.S. degree program.

CORE REQUIREMENTS

(3 credits) SPEA E262

This course is required of all lower-level BSES majors and should be completed by the end of the second year in the program.  The course utilizes an existing course number; course content has been modified to introduce students to the multidisciplinary treatment of environmental science.

(3 credits) Biology L111

(3 credits) Biology L473

The Department of Biology has revised the prerequisites for L473 so that only L111 is required as a prerequisite.

(5 credits) Chemistry C117

The Chemistry Department now uses C117 and R340 as the standard chemistry sequence for Introductory Chemistry for non-Chemistry science majors.  Chemistry switched to the C117 and R340 sequence which replaces the old C117 and C118 lecture+lab format.  The third course in the sequence may be selected from either A314 or N330.  Chemistry has initiated this change in their course offering to accommodate the needs of a more generalized science student.  Note that CHEM 341 or SPEA E464 may be used in place of R340

(5 credits) Chemistry R340

(4 credits) Chemistry A314+A316

(2-4 credits) CSCI A202 or GEOG G250 or SPEA E325

Computer Science has agreed to create a special sections of A202 specifically tailored for the BSES when enrollment numbers justify such effort.   Geog G250 or SPEA E325 are present options that are available to satisfy this requirement.

(3 credits) Geography G304

Election of M365 to fulfill the statistics requirement will work toward a minor in Mathematics.
