Spring 2009 CEUS Course Offerings (term
4092)
Due to CEUS by May 1, 2008.
The information from these
forms is used for Schedule of Classes entry and also to enter data into a
detailed electronic budget program for the College.
Items in bold are REQUIRED for Registration/Scheduling
data input.
Primary Instructor:
If course has more than one instructor, provide secondary instructor name
and UID:
Your University ID #:
Variable Topic Descriptive Title: (30 character limit)
Titles have a 30 character limit (including spaces). If the above 30
character title doesn't accurately describe your CEUS variable title class,
list the ≤30 character title above that
will be printed with the course number and
list below the full title to be added to the schedule as a text note
underneath the course details.
Instruction Type:
Class Meeting Pattern: Before selecting, read the cautions
and instructions below.
Non Standard Meeting Time/Day:
Keep Wednesdays 4:00-5:00 free
for CEUS department meetings. Do not choose class times that conflict
with standard CEUS language classes.
The Registrar requires CEUS to
submit a balanced schedule that includes late afternoon, evening and Friday
classes and not just prime time
Monday to Thursday classes. Non-prime time is 8:00-9:04 AM and
2:30-10:00 PM. If we don't balance our schedule, the department as a
whole gets lower priority for assignments and some courses by random
Registrar selection may not get classroom assignments. When this
happens, we'll be offered limited options for alternate times after all
other classes have been assigned.
The
schedule is based on 50-minute class periods meeting daily or thrice weekly
(usually MWF) and on 75-minute class periods (usually meeting twice weekly
on TR or MW). The Registrar
reports 75 minute MW classes are problematic, especially during the prime
time hours of 9:05 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., so the Registrar urges use of other
standard time/day sequences. Your chance of classroom assignment
improves if you avoid teaching one day per week classes and select standard class times
following the Room Assignment Policy for General Classrooms.
- CATEGORY 1 (highest priority for assignment):
- - 50 min. daily
- - 50 min. 4 days/wk
- - 50 min. MWF
- - 75 min. TR
-
- CATEGORY 2
- - 50 min. MW
(does not meet required minutes for 3 credit classes)-
- CATEGORY 3
- - 50 min. TR
(does not meet required minutes for 3 credit classes)-
- CATEGORY 4
- - 75 min. MW
-
- CATEGORY 5 (lowest priority for assignment)
- - all others
Faculty and students
are also responsible for reviewing the final exam schedule when scheduling or
enrolling in classes to insure no final exam time conflicts. If you
teach one-day-per-week classes at the same hour on both MW or TR ,
your final exams will conflict. Before setting your class times, check
the final exam policies and schedule. If the final exam schedule
for the coming semester isn't posted, check the last spring semester at
http://registrar.indiana.edu/~registra/finalexamsche.shtml.
Duration:
(Eight week and irregular session courses
need CEUS chair approval.)
If class will meet in your office or
another room not controlled by the Registrar, provide building and room
number or other details:

Room Capacity and Enrollment Estimates:
Minimum expected enrollment (required by Registrar):
Maximum expected enrollment (required by Registrar):
Classroom space is assigned on the basis of
estimated enrollment. Estimated enrollment must constitute an honest
estimate regardless of room assignment considerations. Provide
written explanation if the anticipated enrollment exceeds previous actual
enrollment by more than 15%.
Actual expected enrollment under this course number (required by College):
NOTE:
If the estimated actual
enrollment for your proposed course is less than the College minimum (6
graduates, or 10 undergraduates, or 10 combined UG/GR), tell us how you
arrived at the estimate and provide a justification for the course. The
Board of Trustees requires the College to submit a low enrolled course
report that includes justifications.
Low enrollment justification:
Grading Basis:
Conjoined Sections:
Conjoined Sections
are classes with multiple class numbers meeting at the same time and
place that have been permanently combined in the Master Course Catalog. An example is undergraduate and graduate sections of a CEUS class
such as CEUS-U374 and CEUS-U574 that meet together. It could also be a
multi-department listing such as CEUS-U397, ANTH-E397 and NELC-N397.
Cross
Lists are classes
announced by another department in their section of the Schedule of
Classes under the heading Cross
Listed Courses. It's
a way for departments to make students aware of topic-appropriate
courses outside their department.
NOTE:
RELS requires instructors to hold adjunct faculty status in RELS before
they'll print a cross list. EALC has an odd arrangement for cross lists,
treating them much the same as joint-listed courses. Any course that's
cross listed under EALC can be used to satisfy EALC degree requirements.
That's unusual. Expect to provide course details to the EALC chair for
approval.
Joint
List means
separate course numbers are assigned by each department but the classes
meet together. The Registrar limits joint list combinations to no more
than 5 sections. (For example CEUS-U397, CEUS-U597, ANTH-E397,
ANTH-E600, NELC-N397.)
If course will be offered under two CEUS course numbers (undergraduate
and graduate), provide other CEUS course catalog number
Actual expected enrollment under this second course number (required by College):
-
- If course is to be cross-listed, provide the other department name:
If course is to be joint-listed, provide the other department name and
course catalog number:
Tell us if separate enrollment limits should be set for each joint
listed section. Otherwise enrollment will be set as first-come-first-served:
Special Requirements, Instructions or Restrictions (Control + left click allows multiple selection)
Text notes to be inserted in Schedule of Classes:
Other notes/details:
If a prerequisite course is required to register, provide the
prerequisite Subject and Course Catalog Number(s):
If permission of instructor is required to register, there are two
options. Ask CEUS to add a course note to the Schedule of Classes course
entry such as "students must contact instructor before enrolling."
(Any
student who hasn't contacted the instructor can be removed before or after
classes begin.) If electronic permissions are imperative, attach a
justification to request chair approval. Electronic permissions involve a
chain of communication from student to instructor to CEUS staff who must
do individual electronic permission entry in OneStart for each
student before the student can register. Avoid the latter if at all
possible.
It's important to note for undergraduate classes if the course is
approved for Arts & Humanities or Social and Historical Studies or Culture
Studies distributional credit. Approval for such credit can increase
enrollments. For more information (or to apply for this credit), see the
College of Arts and Sciences Bulletin
http://www.indiana.edu/~bulletin/iub/coas. College guidelines for this
credit can be found at
http://www.college.indiana.edu/faculty/uci/distribution.shtml and
http://www.college.indiana.edu/faculty/uci/guidelines.shtml
If you need accommodation under the Americans with Disabilities Act,
state the accommodation requirement specific to this class. NOTE: The disability and the
specific accommodations you require need to be on file with the appropriate IU office. Faculty go through the Dean of Faculties Office to document a
disability requiring accommodation; student academic appointees contact the
Office of Disability Services for Students.
Faculty are reminded to review the CEUS MA
Track course histories to insure proposed courses allow completion of MA
degree requirements in a reasonable time frame. Coordinate course
offerings with other faculty teaching in your track(s) - or copy and
forward a copy of the CEUS course submission receipt to other faculty in
your track. If you submit course times that conflict with other faculty
in a study track we’ll presume you’ve discussed and approved the
conflict as inconsequential to students in the study track.
