Skills Anticipated Upon Completion of Concentration Area:

Career Opportunities:

The undergraduate concentration area in Atmospheric Science offers both a focus for Physical Geography within the Department, and potential job and career opportunities upon graduation. Much of the emphasis is on the physical basis of weather and climate as well as the use of quantitative techniques. Experience in these areas can lead to a wide range of career opportunities. Examples include: consulting and research for private companies, federal, state and local government; the National Weather Service (NWS, note you should contact NWS to determine current requirements for specific levels), and teaching positions in colleges and universities (after completion of appropriate graduate work -- also available at I.U. Geography).

Internships in Geography:

Students can sign up for up to 6 credit hours of internship credit through the Geography Department. The department will assist in placement provided that the internship is related to the student's program within the department. We recommend that students take internships at the end of their junior year. The internship may involve staff work or research within the department as well as in the community.

Internships and Jobs:

National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration
National Weather Service
WGN TV, Chicago
WISH TV, Indianapolis
Indiana Department of Natural Resources
U.S. Department of Commerce
Smithsonian Institute
