Advantages of Direct Admission

If you have a strong interest in a major in Arts and Sciences and an excellent high school record, the Direct Admit Program for the College of Arts and Sciences may be right for you.

Most incoming freshmen at IU enroll in and receive academic advising from the University Division, and are later certified into the College if they choose an Arts and Sciences major. Exploratory students in the Hutton Honors College who select a major in the College of Arts and Sciences must also be certified.

The Direct Admit Program allows you to bypass this certification step. The College finds that students who connect directly with a major when they begin their studies at IU tend to have great success during and after college. Here are some more advantages:

  • You can immediately join your chosen department as a major, allowing you to have a more focused start on your academic career.
  • You will be paired with an academic advisor in your major who can provide extensive insight into your area of study.
  • Many departments pair their Direct Admit students with faculty mentors in their fields of study.
  • You will have access to programs developed just for direct admit students, including a specialized course - Q175, Welcome to the College.
  • Many in-state students in the Direct Admit Program receive the Indiana Scholars Award, a merit scholarship of $1,000 per academic year renewable for up to a total of four years of study at IU. This award can be combined with many other merit scholarships at IU.

By taking advantage of all of these resources, you will be able to establish your own academic identity within the College of Arts and Sciences and have direct access to the very welcoming intellectual communities found here. Being selected as a directly admitted student is an honor that we encourage you to list on your resume and your professional portfolio.
