Services for Students

Academic Counseling
The College of Arts and Sciences has academic advisors in each of the major departments. Students are encouraged to seek the counsel of their advisor. Please also refer to the Student Academic Center's entry below for additional academic counseling.

Student Academic Center (SAC)

Offers a variety of academic support services for students at any stage of their undergraduate career. Service operates on a walk-in and scheduled appointment basis. All services are open to enrolled students and are free of charge. The Individualized Academic Assessment and Assistance Program focuses on helping students target specific learning problems, identify areas of academic weakness, and choose appropriate SAC classes. The SAC also offers a variety of academic support groups. The center sponsors workshops throughout the year that concentrate on specific disciplines, teaching learning strategies, career and academic planning, foreign languages, and tailored mini-workshops targeted at specific groups. These workshops take place at the SAC or its Briscoe/Ashton satellite locations. Call the center for details. For individuals who desire one-on-one tutoring in specific subjects, Residence Peer Tutors are also available at six of the academic residence halls on campus. SAC staff members are available at Ashton and Briscoe academic support centers during the evening hours on a walk-in basis. Call the SAC or consult their Web site for details.

Writing Tutorial Services
Ballantine Hall 206
Offers free assistance to students at any stage of the writing process, writing for any university course. Appointments are recommended, but not required. Hours are Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Phone 855-6738. WTS tutors are also available at the Main Library (on the undergraduate side) for walk-in tutoring (Monday through Thursday, 6 to 9 p.m.), and at the Academic Support Centers in Briscoe and Ashton.

Mathematics Learning Center
Swain East 338
Actual hours vary by semester, but tend to be 12 to 4 p.m., Monday  through Thursday. The center is designed to help students enrolled in M014, M025, M026, J111, J112, and J113. Assistance with higher level courses is sometimes available. Help is available on a walk-in basis. Contact Vid Warren at 855-8921 for more information.

Paid Tutors
Many departments keep lists of qualified tutors who will arrange individual tutoring for pay. Check with the director of undergraduate studies of the appropriate department.

Career Information
Arts and Sciences Career Services (ASCS) and Career Development Center (CDC)

ASCS and the CDC provide services to assist undergraduate and graduate students in making informed academic and career decisions. Programs include Career Counseling Services, Student Employment Office, Internship Opportunities Program, the Graduate Career Advising Program, and placement services. Health Professions and Prelaw Information Center

Special Help Services

Alcohol and Drug Information Center, 705 E. Seventh, offers information and education on alcohol and drugs. Referrals will be made to appropriate outside agencies for clinical assessment of alcohol and drug problems. Phone 855-5414.

Counseling and Psychological Services offers individual counseling, group counseling, couples counseling, and psychiatric consultation, for students only, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, at the Health Center, 600 N. Jordan. Phone 855-5711.

The Center for Human Growth is located in the School of Education, Room 0001, and offers counseling services by Counseling and Educational Psychology graduate students through the School of Education. Phone 856-8302 for information.

The Psychological Clinic offers outpatient services for a variety of problems, in most cases without cost to IU students. Services offered vary by semester. (No services usually offered in the summer.) Please call 855-2311 for more information on what services are currently available.

Sexual Assault Crisis Service, IU Health Center, 600 North Jordan Avenue, provides education, crisis intervention, and individual and group counseling to victims of sexual assault, their families, and friends. Any member of the IU community can use this service. A professional counselor can be reached through the crisis line (855-8900) 24 hours a day. Individual appointments can be made through the administrative line (855-5711) from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Services are free of charge.

The Student Advocates Office, Franklin 206, helps students solve problems they have encountered on campus and offers Mediation Services to students in conflict with each other. Phone 855-0761.

Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Student Support Services at 705 E. Seventh acts as an education, resource, and information center for campus and community groups, events, and activities. The office houses a library of more than 1,700 books and videos, available to all individuals, as well as a Peer Support program for students dealing with coming out issues.
