October 22, 2001
Present were faculty members Linda Smith, Walter Gantz, Michael Gasser, Gerald Wright, Lynda Delph, Allan Edmonds, Cynthia Bannon, Richard Carr, Jim Craig (ex-officio from the Policy committee), and academic deans Kirstine Lindemann, Sharon O'Bryan, and Catharine Hoff.

ACTIONS
1. Approved minutes of October 1, 2001 meeting.
2. Approved the minor in Exercise Science (in the School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation) for students in the College.
3. Approved a new interdepartmental major in Afro-American Studies and Religious Studies.
4. Approved a new certificate in "New Media and Interactive Storytelling" to be offered by the department of Telecommunications.

DISCUSSION
The committee briefly discussed Distance education and correspondence courses. Jim Craig updated the committee on the deliberations of the Policy committee about their deliberations on this matter.

The committee continued discussion of the Mathematics Fundamental Skills requirement centering on the issue of whether a distinction should be made between a fundamental skills requirement that ensures a level competency expected to be achieved in high school and a mathematics or quantitative requirement for graduation. Representatives from the Mathematics department will meet with the committee in December.

The next meeting is scheduled for 8:00A on Monday, November 12, 2001, in Kirkwood Hall 007.
