Conversation Partners Program for International AIs and Undergraduates

The Conversation Partners Program pairs international graduate students with undergraduates to talk about student life. The program offers a unique opportunity for international students to improve their conversation skills and idiomatic English. It also provides a first-hand opportunity to gain a better understanding of the academic and social life of the students they will teach. Undergraduate participants learn about life in a different culture and gain a new perspective on their own. Pairs of participants meet weekly at a mutually convenient time. Undergraduates host international AIs on tour of the residence halls or sorority and fraternity houses and introduce them to other aspects of student life (e.g. student clubs and organizations, the work-study program and extra-curricular activities). While guidelines and topic are provided, students are encouraged to explore topics of mutual interest. Occasionally during the program all participants come together to enjoy a meal or watch a film.
Frequently Asked Questions about the Program
Who can participate in the program?

Graduate Students: The program is open to international associate instructors or international graduate students who will work as AIs.

Undergraduates: The program is open to sophomore, juniors and seniors of any major.

How much time does it take?

The program is offered every semester. It runs for 9 weeks usually between week 3 and week 11 of the semester. Students meet with their partners or attend an event with their partners once a week for about an hour. Twice during the program students may meet with the program coordinator to talk about their experiences.

How are partners matched?

While we do ask some questions on the application form to help us pair students, overall, students are paired randomly at the orientation dinner.

What topics are covered each week?

There is a guideline book of topics for each week. Partners should cover the topic for the week, but they are encouraged to use these topics a springboard for other conversations. Typical topics include:

  • Life Stories
  • School and school life
  • Student living spaces
  • Food and eating
  • Art, literature, and traditions

What are some of the group activities?

Typical activities include:

  • Orientation Dinner
  • Visit to student dorms
  • Films and discussion
  • American pie tasting night
  • Final pot luck dinner

If I enroll in the program must I meet every week?

Yes. Because the success of the experience relies on developing a relationship over time, only students who can commit to the full nine weeks should participate.

What should I do if I have a problem with my partner?

If you have any concerns during the program, contact the Dean DiPietro
