American National Election Survey 2002. The CSR conducted the 2002 American National Election Study. The telephone survey used two samples - the participants in the 2000 ANES and an additional new random sample. The survey began in September 2002. The pre-election phase ended on November 4. From November 6 through December 6 2002, the pre-election survey participants were re-interviewed.
More about NSSE. The survey was originally sponsored by the Pew Charitable Trusts. Since its start in 1999, additional organizations have continued the support. In 2003, approximately 348,000 students were surveyed from 440 institutions that participated. The response rate for NSSE2003 was similar to previous years - approximately 43 percent of the students participated. In 2002, approximately 300,000 students from 368 universities and colleges participated in mail and web survey.
The NSSE 2001 questionnaire was redesigned and cognitive testing indicated that readability and navigation were improved. As with NSSE 2000, both paper and web versions were used. To see the 2001 paper version, click here; to see the 2001 Web version, click here.
Three research projects were conducted in 2001 to further help understand how students respond to the questionnaire. Cognitive interviews were conducted in October 2000. A telephone survey of nonrespondents was conducted in spring 2001 to determine if there are differences between respondents and nonrespondents on their answers to specific content questions. A sample of Indiana University students responded to both the NSSE and the College Student Experiences Questionnaire (CSEQ) to determine differences across the questionnaires. Many NSSE questions were based on CSEQ questions.
During the 1999 academic year, the CSR conducted pilot surveys of undergraduates at approximately 70 universities and colleges. Approximately 50,000 students were in the pilot surveys. The first full-scale survey (NSSE 2000) with almost 200,000 students who attended 275 institutions was conducted from February through June 2000. The NSSE2001 sample had 225,000 students.
The NSSE and CSR staff collaborate with the NSSE National Advisory Board and the Technical Advisory Panel on survey procedures and dissemination.
Timesharing Experiments for the Social Sciences (TESS). TESS is a national random digit dial telephone survey where multiple researchers include questions on the survey. The survey is funded by the National Science Foundation. The first survey was conducted in 2003 and the third survey was conducted in 2005-2006.
High School Survey of Student Engagement (HSSSE). The high school version of the survey was administered to students in classes in 80 high schools in 2005.
Center on Congress Survey. The CSR conducted a national telephone survey on issues related to the 2006 congressional elections. The survey started in early October. The first wave finished prior to the election. The pre-election survey respondents were re-interviewed after the election and additional interviews were conducted.
College Art Association Membership Survey. The CSR conducted a web survey of members of the College Art Association in December and January 2007. The survey focused on membership issues and services.
Sociological Research Practicum (SRP) 2005 Survey. This national telephone survey focuses on various political attitudes. The principal investigator is Dr. Clem Brooks. The SRP students are conducting most interviews with CSR interviewers assisting. The SRP finished interviewing in August.
Indiana Council on Open Government Survey. In early fall 2007, the CSR conducted a survey of Indiana residents who requested help from the Public Access Counselor's office in seeking public records.
Attitudes Towards College Faculty. The CSR conducted a telephone survey of residents of Wisconsin and Colorado to measure their attitudes towards college faculty during summer 2007. A similar survey of college students was conducted in fall 2007.
High Wealth Households Survey. The CSR conducted a mail and web survey of 12,000 households living in high wealth areas for the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University. The survey focuses on charitable giving. The survey began in June and ended in September 2006.
High Wealth Household Telephone Survey. The CSR conducted a pilot telephone survey of high wealth households during December. This survey duplicated a similar survey conducted in summer 2006 for the IU Center on Philanthropy. The survey was conducted in December 2007.
Survey on Administrative Expenses. The CSR conducted a mail and web survey of approximately 6000 nonprofit organizations that focuses on their administrative costs. The survey is sponsored by the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University. The survey began in March and finished in November 2006.
Indiana Firearms Violence Survey. The CSR conducted a telephone survey of Indiana residents that began in January 2004 regarding their attitudes towards firearms and firearm violence. The survey is sponsored by the Indiana Partnership to Prevent Firearm Violence. This survey replicates another survey conducted by the CSR in October 2000.
Indiana University Bloomington Senior Satisfaction Survey. This telephone survey repeated similar surveys of IUB seniors conducted in 1990, 1994, and 1998. The survey asked students to evaluate their experiences at IUB. The survey was directed the chancellors office. Interviewing ended in early May.
Faculty Political Attitudes Survey. The CSR conducted a web survey of 3000 faculty in US two- and four-year colleges from April through June 2006. The survey collected information on political attitudes of faculty and their concerns about academic freedom. The web survey finished in June. Selected non-respondents were interviewed by telephone in July.
Indiana Adult Tobacco Surveys. The CSR conducted a telephone survey of 2000 Indiana residents on a variety of issues related to tobacco use. The first survey began in late November 2006 and finished in February 2007. A second survey started in October 2007 and finished in December.
Survey of Non-Academic PhDs in Sociology. The CSR conducted a web survey of sociology PhDs employed in non-academic organizations. The survey was sponsored by the American Sociological Association. The survey began in February and ended in May 2006.
CISCO Networking Academies Evaluation. The CSR assisted in this project that evaluated various educational outcomes. The CSR conducted web surveys of students from fall 2003 through the 2005-2006 school year. The final reports are in preparation.
Mental Health Attitudes Survey. The CSR conducted a telephone survey of residents of south central Indiana in August and September 2007. The survey focused on attitudes towards persons with mental illnesses. The survey was conducted for the Indiana Consortium for Mental Health Services Research.
Mental Health Services Consumer Satisfaction Survey. Since 1995, the CSR has been conducting an annual telephone survey for the Indiana Division of Mental Health and Addiction. The survey examines the satisfaction of those who received mental health services from state-supported mental health facilities. The 2007 survey started in January and finished in June.
Residential Community Engagement Survey - Telephone Follow-up (RCEP) The CSR conducted a telephone survey of non-respondents to the RCEP survey. Researchers at the University of Michigan Substance Abuse Research Center and San Diego State University conduct the project. The project was conducted in November/December 2005.
American Sociological Association Survey of Seniors Majoring in Sociology. During the spring 2005 semester, the CSR conducted a web survey of seniors majoring in sociology in 90 US colleges and universities. In February 2007, the students were re-contacted to follow their career paths. The survey is funded by the National Science Foundation. The survey ended in summer 2007.
Child Support Payment Survey. The CSR is conducting a telephone survey of participants in a new method for delivering child support payments for the Institute for Family and Social Responsibility. The survey finished in August 2006.
Congress Survey. The CSR conducted a national telephone survey in fall 2002 on issues related to the 2002 elections. Additional questions focused on issues related to awareness of government functions. The survey was conducted for the Center on Congress at Indiana University. Professor Robert Huckfeldt was the PI. The survey began in September. The pre-election phase ended on November 4. From November 14 through December 31, 2002, the pre-election survey participants were re-interviewed.
Lake Family Institute
Survey. The CSR is conducting a mail survey of religious leaders in Indianapolis regarding charitable and church donations for the Lake Family Institute which is part of the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University. The survey ended in August 2006.Indiana Poll. The 2005 Indiana Poll began in early December. This year's Poll includes questions on HPV vaccine, attitudes about the definition of "having sex" and other health-related issues. Approximately 500 Indiana residents will be surveyed. The Poll concluded in December.
Giving Circles Survey. The CSR is conducting a mail survey of members of giving circles in cooperation with the IU Center on Philanthropy. The survey began in November 2007 and ended in June 2008.
School of Fine Arts Alumni Survey. The CSR is conducting a web survey of alumni of the School Fine Arts from February through June 2006. The information from the survey will be used a part of the School's accreditation process. Final datasets are being prepared.
Sexual Harassment in Sport Survey. The CSR conducted a web survey women employed in sports communication from November 2005 - February 2006. The survey focused on conditions of employment.
Indiana University Northwest Climate Survey. The CSR conducted a web survey of faculty and staff at Indiana University Northwest during May and June 2006. The survey focused on a variety of campus issues.
GLATA survey. The CSR conducted a survey of members of the Great Lakes Athletic Trainers Association regarding continuing education needs. This web survey was fielded from February through April 2006.
Belmont County Ohio Survey. The CSR conducted a telephone survey of residents of Belmont County, Ohio that focused on concerns about crime and safety. The survey was conducted in June 2005.
State Environmental Managers Survey. The CSR conducted a web survey of environmental managers in state agencies to determine the relationship between environmental regulation and industry investment decisions. The survey ended in July 2005.
Ohio Preparedness Survey.
In summer 2005, the CSR conducted a telephone survey of residents of Ohio. The third survey was conducted in July. The final wave was conducted in October 2005.

fricana Studies Survey. The CSR conducted a web survey of faculty in Africana Studies programs. The survey began spring 2004 and focused on a variety of issues related to the programs. Fabio Rojas from the Indiana University Department of Sociology was the principal investigator.Child Support Evaluation Survey. The CSR conducted a telephone survey of persons receiving child support in Indiana to evaluate two new payment options. Dr. Maureen Pirog of the Institute of Family and Social Responsibility in the Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Affairs directed the project. The survey was conducted in fall 2004.
Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in Anthropology. A web survey of anthropologists regarding their use of hands-on learning the classroom was conducted during 2004. The survey was directed by Professors Frederika Kaestle and April Sievert of the Indiana University Department of Anthropology.
Indiana Poll. The 2003 Indiana Poll began on September 17. This year, the survey has two modules. Each module will have 500 telephone interviews of a random sample of adult Indiana residents. Topics on the Poll include attitudes towards teaching condom use, estate and income taxes, anti-smoking ordinances, and blood alcohol content laws. The first module finished in October 2003 and the second module finished in November 2003.
Indiana Poll. The 2004 Indiana Poll was recently completed. The Indiana Poll has a statewide random sample of adult Indiana residents. Topics on the Poll included media use and the 2004 elections.
Sports Marketing Survey. The CSR conducted a web survey of sports media relations directors of colleges and professional teams. The survey was directed by Kimberly Miloch of the Indiana University School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation. The survey began in December and finished in February 2005.
UMC 2004 Survey. This is a mail survey of the delegates to the United Methodist Church's General Conference that was held in May 2004. The survey was conducted in fall 2004 and winter 2005. Dr. James Wood was the principal investigator. The survey repeated similar surveys that were conducted after the 1992, 1996, and 2000 UMC General Conferences.
Mental Health Services Consumer Satisfaction Survey. Since 1995, the CSR has been conducting this survey for the Indiana Division of Mental Health and Addiction. The survey examines the satisfaction of those who received mental health services from state supported mental health facilities. The telephone survey of more than 3500 consumers began in February and ended in late May.
American Sociological Association Cohort Survey. The CSR conducted a web and paper survey of sociologists who were awarded PhDs in sociology in 1996-1997. This cohort has participated in two earlier surveys. The survey examined their career patterns since receiving a PhD. Dr. Roberta Spalter-Roth directed the survey at the ASA. The survey began in December 2003 and finished in April 2004.
American Sociological Association Minority Fellowship Program Survey. Starting in March 2004, the CSR conducted a web and mail survey of fellows who participated in the ASA's Minority Fellowship Program. The information will be used in support of a proposal to continue the program for an additional five years. Dr. Mercedes Rubio directed the survey at the ASA.
Indiana University Information Technology Services Survey. The CSR conducted the 19th Annual Information Technology Survey for UITS from February through April 2008. This survey is used by UITS to plan for the technology needs of IU faculty, students, and staff. IUB, IUPUI, IU East and IU Northwest participated in 2008.
Indiana University Information Technology Services Survey. The CSR conducted the 18th Annual Information Technology Survey for UITS from February through April 2007. This survey is used by UITS to plan for the technology needs of IU faculty, students, and staff. IUB, IUPUI, IU East, IU Kokomo, and IU South Bend participated in 2007.
Indiana University Information Technology Services Survey. The CSR conducted the 16th Annual Information Technology Survey for UITS from February through April 2005. This survey is used by UITS to plan for the technology needs of IU faculty, students, and staff. IUB, IUPUI, IU East, IU Kokomo, and IU Northwest were surveyed in 2006.
Indiana University Information Technology Services Survey. The CSR conducted the 14th Annual Information Technology Survey for UITS from February through April 2004. This survey is used by UITS to plan for the technology needs of IU faculty, students, and staff. IUB, IUPUI, IUE, IUK, and IUN were surveyed this year. Based on the results from an experiment last spring, this year the survey was conducted as a web survey instead of a paper survey. Survey results.
Information Technology Workforce Survey. The CSR conducted a web survey of information technology students at five universities during the spring 2004 semester. The survey examined student attitudes towards careers in information technology. Dr. Jean Robinson from IUB directed the study that is funded by the National Science Foundation. A telephone survey of faculty and administrators was conducted in summer and early fall 2004. This surveys compared faculty and student outlooks on IT. Memphis and St. Louis Surveys. The CSR participated in a project that examined charitable giving in the Memphis, TN and St. Louis, MO metropolitan areas. Mail, web and telephone surveys of households, businesses, foundations, and nonprofits were conducted. The Indiana University Center on Philanthropy directed the project. The surveys began in September and finished in mid-October 2003.
Phi Delta Kappa - South Central Indiana Counties Survey. In December and January, the CSR conducted a telephone survey of residents of four southern Indiana counties. The survey will support research being conducted by Phi Delta Kappa as part of its evaluation of the South Central Indiana CAPE program.
Global Ageing Initiative. The CSR participated as a data collection site for the Global Ageing Initiative. The Initiative is a multi-disciplinary team of investigators from 14 geographically diverse countries from around the world who are participating in a collaborative investigation concerning Ageing Well. A principal activity of the Initiative is a survey that will be conducted in all countries. The CSR provided a web-based data entry program for the researchers from each country to enter data from their surveys. Dr. Barbara Hawkins from the Indiana University Center on Aging and Aged is the PI.
Music Education in Preschool Survey. The CSR is conducting a mail survey of directors of preschools across the country. The survey focused on the music education curriculum. Dr. Rachel Nardo from IUPUI directed the study. The survey ended in January 2004.
Land Use Study. The CSR conducted a mail survey of property owners in Monroe County Indiana that focused on land use. The survey was conducted from September through December 2003. The research was in support of a larger project underway the Center for the Study of Institutions, Population and Environmental Change (CIPEC) at Indiana University.
Biology Education Needs Survey. The CSR conducted a telephone survey of biologists and biological research organizations on issues regarding postgraduate education that began in February and was completed in March 2004. A web survey of undergraduate biology students was conducted in September and October 2004. The survey was sponsored by the University of Akron Department of Biology.
State Treatment Needs Assessment Project. The CSR conducted a telephone survey of 6000 Indiana residents to provide information regarding treatment needs for alcohol and other drugs in Indiana. The survey was conducted for the Indiana Division of Mental Health and Addiction, and Jim Wolf is the PI. The survey began in late April and finished in August 2003.
Vocational Rehabilitation Survey. In January 2003, the CSR began a statewide telephone survey of 2000 persons with disabilities in Indiana. The survey was conducted for the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration. Dr. Vicki Pappas of the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community directed the survey. The survey ended in June 2003.
Effective Philanthropy Survey. The CSR conducted a survey of directors of foundations to determine their attitudes and practices related to effective philanthropy. The Center on Nonprofits and Philanthropy at the Urban Institute directed the study. The mail and web survey began in March and ended in July 2003.
Work Preparedness Survey. This project is a three-year study of directors of workforce development agencies. The first two waves of telephone interviews were conducted in summer 2000 and summer 2001. The third wave began in March and finished in May 2003. The purpose of the study is to determine the strategies the organizations are using to reduce barriers to employment. Indiana University Intellectual Property Policy Survey. The CSR conducted a web survey of IU faculty at all campuses to gauge their awareness of the university's Intellectual Property Policy. The survey began in July and finished in September 2003.
Personal Safety Survey. The CSR conducted a national telephone survey that focused on personal safety concerns following the 9-11 tragedy. The survey began in late July 2002 and finished in September. Dr. Mohammad Torabi of the IU School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation was the PI.
Pulaski County CAPE Survey. The CSR conducted a telephone survey of residents of Pulaski County, IN. The survey started in May and finished on June 15, 2003. The survey focused on the awareness of selected education programs in Pulaski County. The survey supported research conducted by the Indiana Center for Evaluation.
Journalists Survey 2002. The CSR conducted a telephone survey of 1500 journalists nationwide. The survey began in July and finished in March 2003. This survey repeats similar surveys conducted in 1982 and 1992.
Journalists Survey 2007. The CSR conducted a survey of US journalists from October to December 2007. The journalists were selected from those who participated in the 2002 survey. The survey asked journalists about their work and training.
Indiana Giving Survey. In July 2004, the CSR began a mail, web, and telephone survey of households and major businesses and foundations in Indiana regarding charitable giving. The Indiana University Center on Philanthropy directed the project which ended in September 2004.
DuPage County Survey. The CSR conducted a mail survey on philanthropic topics in DuPage County, IL. The survey began in January 2003 and finished in June 2003. The survey was conducted for the Indiana University Center on Philanthropy.
Giving USA 2007 Survey. This mail, web, and fax survey of 4800 nonprofit organizations began in January and ended in April. Giving USA is an annual survey that measures organizational fundraising. The survey is directed by the Indiana University Center On Philanthropy.

Giving USA is an annual survey and in 2004 it also includes an additional sample of 2000 churches. The survey measures organizational fundraising. In late January 2003, the CSR began mailing to 7000 nonprofit organizations nationwide to measure their fundraising levels. Both mail and web surveys were used. American Sociological Association Department Survey. During 2002, the CSR conducted a mail survey of sociology departments across the country for the ASA. The survey examined various characteristics of sociology departments. Dr. Roberta Spalter-Roth directed the survey at the ASA. Preliminary results were presented at the ASA annual meeting in Chicago in August.
Bloomington Faculty Council Surveys. From December 2002 through February 2003, the CSR conducted mail surveys of IUB faculty for the Bloomington Faculty Council as part of the reviews of deans on the Bloomington campus.

The CSR conducted the survey in support of research being conducted by the Indiana Center for Evaluation.
Brown County CAPE Survey. The CSR conducted a telephone survey of residents of Brown County, IN in March and April 2003. The survey focused on the education needs of Brown County residents. The survey supports research being conducted by the Indiana Center for Evaluation. A smaller survey of business leaders in Brown County finished in May 2003.
Marshall County CAPE Survey. The CSR conducted a telephone survey of residents of Marshall County, IN in April 2003. The survey focused on the awareness of selected post-secondary education programs in Marshall County. The survey supports research being conducted by the Indiana Center for Evaluation.
Sociological Research Practicum 2001 Survey. In spring 2001, the CSR assisted in the development and testing of a survey of children in foster care. Most initial interviewing was conducted by the SRP students with support from the CSR staff. The CSR staff began conducting followup interviews with the children in July 2002. Drs. Jane McLeod and David Takeuchi are the PIs for the SRP. The survey finished on December 31, 2002.

Community Dimensions in Indiana Survey. The CSR conducted a mail and web survey of directors of nonprofit organizations in Indiana. The survey began in November 2001 and finished in July 2002. Donors Forum of Chicago Survey. The CSR conducted a mail and web survey of directors of nonprofit organizations in Illinois for the Donors Forum of Chicago. The survey began in May 2002 and ended in December 2002. Dr. Kirsten Gronbjerg of the IU School of Public and Environmental Affairs was the PI.
Indiana University Medical Center Survey. The CSR conducted a survey of participants in a summer minority student training program held at the IU Medical Center. The program introduces students to medical research. Dr. David Wilkes conducts the program. The survey began in June 2002 and finished in October 2002.
Sociological Research Practicum 2002 Survey. In April 2002, the CSR began a telephone survey of 1500 residents of Indiana and Ohio as part of the SRP2002. The survey focused on attitudes toward education. The PI is Dr. Pamela Walters. The CSR is conducted interviews in April and early May. The SRP students conducted interviews during May and June. The CSR finished interviewing in August 2002.
MLA Survey. The CSR conducted a survey of university graduate departments for the Modern Language Association. This mail, fax, phone, and web survey repeated surveys conducted since the early 1990s. David Laurence of the MLA directed the project. The survey began in October and finished in late July 2002.
Ohio School Administrators, Teachers, and Parents Survey. This telephone survey of school administrators, teachers, and parents focused on the outcomes from reading and literacy grants received by selected schools and school districts in Ohio. The CSR provided survey support to the Indiana Center for Evaluation for this project. The project began in April and finished in August 2002.
Cleveland Voucher Project 2002. In April 1999, the CSR first conducted a survey of approximately 1400 parents in Cleveland, Ohio to ask their opinions of a voucher program in Cleveland. The 2002 survey began in May 2002 and finished in July. The principal investigator of the project was Professor Kim Metcalf of the Indiana Center for Evaluation.
Crime Analysis Units Survey. In April 2002, the CSR began a mail survey of police departments to assess their use of crime analysis units. The survey was directed by Matthew Giblin of the IU Department of Criminal Justice. Data collection ended in August 2002.
Condom Use Study. From early June through late July 2002, the CSR conducted a telephone survey of residents of non-metropolitan counties in Indiana on issues related to condom use. Professor William Yarber from Rural Center for AIDS and STD Prevention was the principal investigator.
Giving USA Survey. From January through April 2002, the CSR conducted a national survey of approximately 7000 nonprofit organizations to measure their fundraising levels. Mail, web, fax, and telephone interviews were used. The survey was conducted for the Indiana University Center On Philanthropy.
Benchmarks Survey. The CSR conducted a survey of 3000 directors of nonprofit organizations. The survey began in October and ended in March 2002. The survey was sponsored by the Indiana University Center On Philanthropy and the Urban Institute. Mail and web questionnaires were used.
Bloomington Faculty Council Distributed Education Survey. The CSR conducted a survey of IUB faculty in spring semester 2002 covering issues related to distributed education. The BFC Distributed Education Committee directed the project. A final report from the project was presented to the BFC.
Indiana University Information Technology Services Survey. The CSR conducted the 13th Annual Information Technology Survey for UITS from January to April 2003. This survey is used by UITS to plan for the technology needs of IUB faculty, students, and staff. The CSR scanned the IUPUI version of the survey. Three regional IU campuses also participated in the survey. An experimental web version of the survey was evaluated.

National Black Employment Survey. Telephone interviewing for this survey began in mid-June 2000 and finished in December 2000. The National Black Employment Survey is a national survey of employed African Americans on topics related to employment and alcohol use. This survey was conducted at three sites and involved screening for employed African American respondents. Stephen Tuch of George Washington University and Jack Martin of Kent University are the PIs. The project finished in May 2002 at the CSR after merging data from the three sites.
National Center on Accessibility Survey. The CSR conducted a telephone survey of participants in the training programs offered by the National Center on Accessibility at Indiana University. The survey focused on the outcomes of the training for improving access at recreation facilities. Telephone interviewing began in late February 2002 and ended in early April 2002.
Board of Aeons Residence Halls Survey. The CSR conducted a web survey of residents of the IU residence halls for the IU Board of Aeons. The survey assessed satisfaction with aspects of living in residence halls.
Student Recreational Sports Center Survey. The CSR conducted a web survey of IU graduate and undergraduate students to assess their use of the SRSC in spring 2002.
Career Placement Offices Survey. A survey of IU juniors and seniors regarding their use of campus placement offices services began in late February and will continue through March 2002. Sue Sgambelluri directs the project for the CPO offices.
Mental Health Services Consumer Satisfaction Survey. Since 1995, the CSR has been conducting this survey for the Indiana Division of Mental Health and Addiction. The survey examines the satisfaction of those who received mental health services from state supported mental health facilities. The telephone survey of more than 3500 consumers began in August 2001 and ended in February 2002.
Phi Delta Kappa - Fairbanks Alaska Survey. In March 2002, the CSR conducted a telephone survey of residents of Fairbanks Alaska to measure their satisfaction with the local schools and other education issues. The project was coordinated by Phi Delta Kappa.
Civility in the Classroom Survey. This survey of IUB faculty, associate instructors, and adjunct faculty regarding their experiences with incivility in their classes began in early April and concluded in June 2000. The survey was sponsored by the Dean of Students and the Dean of the Faculties. On June 23, 2000, the results were presented to the IU Board of Trustees. Owen County Survey. In December 2001 and January 2002, the CSR conducted a telephone survey of 500 Owen County residents for the Strategic Development Group. The survey focused on education needs and other social issues in Owen County.
Owen County Survey II. A followup survey similar to earlier survey began in early April and ended in May 2004. 500 residents were surveyed using the same procedures.
Performing Arts Survey. The CSR conducted a mail and web survey of approximately 6000 performing arts presenters during November and December 2001. Mark Hagar of the Urban Institute directed the project.
Indiana University University Information Technology Services (UITS) Survey. For the past 15 years, the CSR has conducted surveys of Indiana University students, faculty and staff on issues regarding computing and other services provided by UITS. Until 1997, the survey was conducted on the Bloomington campus only but is now conducted on the IUPUI campus and selected regional campuses each year.
American Council of Learned Societies Survey. This survey of 5000 members of ACLS constituent societies began in June 2001 and finished in October 2001. The survey was sponsored by the ACLS and focused on membership benefits. Preliminary reports were delivered in September; the final report was delivered in late October.
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. For the second year, the CSR conducted a telephone survey former students at IUPUI who did not enroll for the Fall 2001 semester. The survey finished on November 16. Michael Wince of Information Management and Institutional Research at IUPUI is the PI.
Indiana Child Care Survey. This telephone survey of 3300 Indiana parents regarding their child care needs began in February and finished in August 2001. The survey was sponsored by the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration - Division of Family and Children.
Indiana Poll 2001. The Indiana Poll began in November 2001 and was completed on December 8, 2001. Seven researchers contracted for questions on the Poll. Some topics included the recent tax rebate, gambling behavior, internet access, and the death penalty.
Indiana Firefighters Training Facility Location Survey. The CSR conducted a mail survey of firefighters in Indiana to determine their preferences for a training facility. Bill Booth of The Interact Group directed the project. The survey began in mid-July 2001. Data collection ended in September 2001 and the final report was delivered in late October.
Marion County Seatbelt Awareness Survey. The CSR conducted more than 500 telephone interviews over a 12-month period for the Marion County Safety Coalition. This survey identified driving habits and evaluated the effectiveness of current laws and programs. John Ragan of the Purdue University Center for the Advancement of Transportation Safety was the principle investigator. Four waves of approximately 125 interviews each were conducted in November 2000, February, June, and September 2001.
Indiana University Information Technology Services Survey. In spring 2001 the CSR conducted the 11th Annual Information Technology Survey for UITS. This survey is used by UITS to plan for the technology needs of IUB faculty, students, and staff. In addition, the CSR provided scan forms and scanning for the IUPUI version of the survey. The IUB and IUPUI surveys are completed. Similar surveys on five regional IU campuses was completed in August 2001.
Work Preparedness Survey. This project is a three-year study of directors of workforce development agencies. The initial telephone interview was conducted by the CSR from May through August 2000. The second stage of interviewing began in April and finish in July 2001. The purpose of the study is to determine the strategies the organizations are using to reduce barriers to employment. National Estuary Program. The second wave of this survey began in March and finished in July 2001. This mail and telephone survey examined the impact of the National Estuary Program partnerships in 22 estuaries around the country. The CSR reinterviewed approximately 700 government officials, business leaders, and environmental activists who were first interviewed from February to June 1999.
Indiana Higher Education Telecommunication System Survey. The CSR conducted a survey of students who took distance education courses at Indiana colleges and universities. The survey assessed their attitudes towards various distance education issues. Carol Brunty of IHETS directed the project which finished in July 2001.
Status of Women Committee/Campus Climate Survey. This survey was conducted in three parts. The first part - a web survey of approximately 12,000 IUB faculty, staff, and students - finished in March 2001. The second part - a mail survey of about 3000 faculty, staff, and students - was completed in May 2001. The third phase - a Web and mail survey of IU staff finished in July 2001. This survey was conducted for the IU Task Force on the Status of Women and other IU groups. It focused on the campus climate and diversity issues. The questionnaires differed for multiple target groups.
Tipton County Survey. In July 2001, the CSR conducted a telephone survey of Tipton County Indiana residents for the Tipton County Foundation. The survey focused on perceived needs for additional education opportunities in Tipton County. Emily Marshman was the project director.
Ohio School Administrators Survey. This telephone survey of school administrators in Ohio was conducted during June 2001. The survey focused on reading and literacy grants received by the schools and school districts in Ohio. The CSR assisted the Indiana Center for Evaluation in this project.
Hypernet Survey. This telephone survey of Indiana residents focused on membership in nonprofit organizations and volunteering activities. Survey interviewing began in late April and ended in early June 2001. Dr. Kirsten Gronbjerg of the IU School of Public and Environmental Affairs is the PI. This survey is part of the Indiana Nonprofits Scope and Community Dimensions project.
Digital Library Federation Survey. This survey began in early January 2001 and finished in March 2001. The CSR conducted both a mail and web survey of directors of digital libraries in the US. The study will be used to examine the context in which the digital libraries are being developed and to create a profile of the programs. The PI for this project was the University Dean of Libraries, Suzanne Thorin.
Journalism Educators Survey. In October, the CSR began interviewing 400 journalism educators. The survey focused on the impact of technology on teaching and research. Professor Paul Voakes from the IU School of Journalism was the PI. The survey ended in late January 2001.
Ohio Community School Evaluation Project. This survey of parents of children in selected schools in Ohio was conducted from March through May 2001. The CSR is assisted the Indiana Center for Evaluation in an evaluation of community schools in Ohio.
Board of Aeons Student Organization Survey. The CSR conducted a survey of leaders of IU student organizations for the IU Board of Aeons. The survey assessed how the organizations might cooperate and collaborate on joint projects. Interviewing was done during April 16, 2001. The Board of Aeons will prepare a report to the Chancellor based on the survey results.
Indiana University Alumni Survey. In Spring 2001, the CSR is assisted the IU Alumni Association with a survey of the readers of their magazine - Indiana Alumni. Mike Wright of the IU Alumni Association was the project leader.
Drug Courts Evaluation Project. The CSR assisted the Monroe County Probation Department in its evaluation of the Drug Courts Pilot Program in Monroe County.
Youth Network of Monroe County Project. The CSR is provided research services to the Network to assist in their evaluation of a peer leadership program targeted towards junior high school students.
Ohio Department of Education. From late November 2000 through January 2001, the CSR interviewed more than 500 Ohio teachers regarding participation in a summer workshop. The study examined the effectiveness of strategies taught at the workshop. The survey was conducted for the Indiana Center for Evaluation.
NSWC Crane Communications Survey. This mail survey of community leaders, media, and educators regarding their perceptions and involvement with various programs at Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane began in January and ended in April 2001. Rhonda Sue Webster from Crane is directing the survey.
Undergraduate Student Survey. The CSR started a survey of Indiana University undergraduates on January 30, 2001. The survey finished in late February. The survey was sponsored by the Indiana University College of Arts and Sciences. The survey focused on student perceptions of various Indiana University academic issues.
UMC 2000 Survey. This survey of the delegates to the United Methodist Church's General Conference that was held in May 2000 in Cleveland started in October and ended in January 2001. Dr. James Wood was the PI. The survey repeated similar surveys that were conducted after the 1992 and 1996 UMC General Conferences.
Bloomington Faculty Council Survey. During fall 2000, the CSR conducted a mail survey of the academic, professional and support staff of IUB libraries for the Bloomington Faculty Council as part of the reviews of deans on the Bloomington campus.
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. Interviewing began in November 2000, for this telephone survey of former students at IUPUI who were not enrolled in the Fall 2000 semester. The survey addressed factors influencing the student retention. This project was completed in early December 2000. Michael Wince of IUPUI's Institutional Research Department is the PI.
Indiana Poll. This survey began in October and ended on November 3, 2000. The Poll contained questions used in the decennial census that allowed us to measure the accuracy of our Poll. The poll also contained a variety of other topics including attitudes towards foster care for children, election and the media, and awareness of alternative high school programs.
Indiana Firearm Violence Survey. The CSR completed telephone interviewing in September 2000 for a survey of Indiana residents regarding their attitudes towards firearms and firearm violence. The survey was sponsored by the Indiana Partnership to Prevent Firearm Violence. The project finished in late October 2000. Dr. Marilyn Bull of the IU School of Medicine was the PI.
Sociological Research Practicum Recruiting Survey. From May through December 2000, the CSR recruited Indianapolis residents for an in-person survey. The students in the Sociological Research Practicum at Indiana University Bloomington conducted the interviews during Summer 2000 and other interviewers continued interviewing through January 2001. Drs. Bernice Pescosolido and Scott Long are the PIs.
Indianapolis Weed and Seed Neighborhoods Survey. From August to early October 2000, the CSR conducted a survey in four Indianapolis neighborhoods where "Weed and Seed" community policing activities have been conducted over the past year. The project's PI was Carol Kramer of C. Kramer and Co.
Indianapolis Neighborhood Association Leaders Survey. The CSR conducted a survey of leaders of neighborhood associations in Indianapolis from August to October 2000. The survey asked the association leaders to evaluate the impact of community policing in Indianapolis. Professor Steven Chermak of the Indiana University Department of Criminal Justice was the PI.

Contact Lens Evaluation Project. In August and September 2000, the CSR assisted Dr. Sarita Soni of the IU School of Optometry in a project to evaluate differences users perceptions of various types of contact lenses.
Summer Freshman Institute Project. As part of a larger project to analyze the impact of an experimental admissions program at IUB, the CSR interviewed parents of students who were admitted for the Summer Freshman Institute in June 2000. Dr. Bernice Pescosolido was the PI.
Health Insurance Coverage Survey. From March to June 2000, the CSR conducted a survey of 5000 Indiana residents to assess their health insurance coverage. The survey was sponsored by the Indiana Family and Social Services Agency. Health Management Associates of Lansing, MI, was the contractor. The Survey Program of the Bureau of Economics and Business Research at the University of Florida collaborated with us on the project.
POLIS Clergy Survey. This survey of Marion County clergy for the POLIS Center at IUPUI began in February and ended in June 2000. The survey contained questions similar to those asked in surveys we conducted in 1997 and 1999 for the POLIS Center regarding religious and community involvement. Dr. William Mirola of Marian College was the PI.
IU Admitted Student Survey. The survey of students admitted to IU for Fall 2000 finished on September 1, 2000. This survey, sponsored by the Dean of Enrollment Services, will be used by IU to better understand its admissions processes. A similar survey was conducted in summer 1999.
Phi Delta Kappa - Cumberland County North Carolina Surveys. During June 2000 and December 2001, the CSR conducted studies of parents of students of the Cumberland County North Carolina School District to measure their satisfaction with the local schools and a school choice program. The projects were coordinated by Phi Delta Kappa.
Cumberland County NC Parent Survey. The CSR conducted a telephone survey of parents of children in the Cumberland County school district. The survey repeated a similar survey conducted in 2001. The survey began in late April and finished in May 2007.
Institute for Family and Social Responsibility. This telephone survey of 1450 persons in Indiana who were affected by welfare reform was conducted to determine their use of social services after their TANF or AFDC support ended. AFDC and TANF recipients who received services from 1995 through 1999 were included in the sample. The project required substantial tracking to find many recipients who moved multiple times. To increase participation from hard-to-contact respondents, CSR staff visited respondents' homes and used cell phones to conduct interviews.
Johnson County United Way Survey. The CSR conducted a survey of residents of Johnson County Indiana during April 2000. The contractor for the study was Strategic Development Group, which provided the data to the Johnson County United Way. The survey focused on social service needs in Johnson County.
Indiana University Information Technology Services Survey. The year 2000 was the tenth year for the UITS survey. This survey is used by UITS to plan for the technology needs of IUB faculty, students, and staff. This year, the CSR also provided data entry for the IUPUI version of the survey.
Indianapolis Star Poll. The CSR conducted three polls in 1999 and one in 2000 for the Indianapolis Star. The second and third polls were conducted in the Fall 1999 and correctly predicted the winner in the Indianapolis mayoral election. The 2000 poll was conducted from March 26-29 and focused on the Indiana primary election.
Community Policing Survey. During 1999, the CSR conducted a national survey of approximately 2500 police chiefs and district commanders in municipal police agencies. The principal investigator was Professor Stephen D. Mastrofski of George Mason University. The project was funded by the National Institute of Justice.
TechAud Project. The CSR worked with IU School of Education researchers and others on this project to help school districts evaluate their computing and other technical support capacities.
Monroe County Community Prevention Coalition Evaluation Project. The CSR provided evaluation services to the MCCPC from early 1998 through January 2000.
Journalists Use of Databases. From December 1999 through February 2000, the CSR conducted a national survey of newspaper and television journalists to determine their use of electronic and other databases in preparing stories. Brooke Barnett of the IU School of Journalism was the principal investigator.
Phi Delta Kappa/Kentucky Project. In January 2000, the CSR conducted an RDD survey of residents of Kentucky to ask their opinions on various issues related to their local schools. PDK analyzed the data for the Kentucky Department of Education.
Bloomington Faculty Council Survey. During fall 1999, the CSR conducted three mail surveys of IUB faculty for the Bloomington Faculty Council as part of the reviews of selected deans on the Bloomington campus.
Indiana Poll 32. The 32nd Indiana Poll was completed on November 23, 1999. The Poll had a variety of questions related to hate crimes, gambling behavior, children's health insurance coverage, and employment and training issues.
POLIS Survey. This survey of Marion County, Indiana, residents for the POLIS Center at IUPUI was conducted in Summer 1999. The survey was similar to one conducted in 1997 for the POLIS Center regarding religious and community involvement.
The Indiana Human Capital Retention Project. This project was conducted by the Indiana Fiscal Policy Institute and was funded by the Lilly Endowment and others. From 1997 to 1999, as part of the Project, the CSR conducted a mail survey of a sample of graduates from Indiana colleges and universities. The samples were selected from the 1985-86, 1990-1991, and 1995-1996 graduates at all levels from two-year to postgraduate programs. In total, more than 10,000 graduates were selected for the study.
Florida Child Support Enforcement Survey. This survey of clients of the Florida Child Support Enforcement Program was completed in early September, 1999. The survey measured satisfaction with the program.
IU Admitted Student Survey. During summer 1999, we conducted a multimode survey of students admitted to IU for the Dean of Enrollment Services. The survey helped IU better understand its admissions processes.

Crane Demo Survey. In May and June 1999, the CSR conducted a Web survey of employees of the Crane Division of the Naval Surface Warfare Center to evaluate a new personnel program.
AGEHR Survey. The CSR conducted a mail survey of the members of the American Guild of English Handbell Ringers during summer 1999. This survey was used to evaluate existing programs and develop new programs for the Guild.
STD Risk Factors Study. During spring and summer 1999, the CSR conducted a survey of women ages 18-39 in four selected counties in South Carolina to examine their behaviors related to risk factors associated with sexually transmitted diseases. Professor William Yarber of Indiana University was the PI.
Environmental Sciences Hiring Outlook Survey. In spring 1999, the CSR conducted a survey of employers of environmental scientists to determine the factors that will influence hiring in the next five years. The Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry sponsored the survey.
Monroe County Community Prevention Coalition Survey. The CSR conducted a survey of residence of Monroe and Delaware Counties Indiana from April - June, 1999. This survey replicated a similar survey conducted in Spring 1996. The purpose was to evaluate changes in awareness of drug and alcohol problems in the counties.
Cleveland Voucher Project. In April 1999, the CSR conducted a survey of approximately 1400 parents in Cleveland, Ohio, to ask their opinions of a voucher program in Cleveland. The program provides scholarships to students that allow them to attend private schools. The principal investigator of the project was Professor Kim Metcalf of the Indiana University School of Education.
Disabilities, Aging and Rehabilitation Services Project. This project was sponsored by the Indiana University Center for Planning and Policy Studies. From March to September 1998, the Center contacted a sample of Indiana households to determine the number of households that had persons with disabilities. Persons with disabilities were then interviewed to determine their needs for various services. Information about the project is available at:
Monroe County Needs Assessment Survey. This 1997 survey was sponsored by the City of Bloomington and United Way of Monroe County, Indiana. The purpose of the survey was to measure Monroe County’s need for various social services, as well as to measure county residents’ perceptions of the need for various social services in the county.
CSR MiniPoll. The primary purpose of the MiniPoll, a small survey of Indiana residents, was to test and develop new survey procedures and to test different question formats on some emerging issues. The survey was completed during March 1999. Some results were reported in press releases in Indiana newspapers.
Home Health Services Study. Beginning in 1995, the Center conducted a two-year panel study of persons receiving home health services in Indiana for the Indiana University Center for Law and Health. The survey gathered data on the effect of program changes to the delivery of home health services during the study period.
Aerospace Knowledge Diffusion Research Project. In 1996, the Center completed an international, multiphase seven-year research project for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The focus of the project was to understand how technical knowledge is transferred from government research labs to industry and universities in the US and other countries. The Center conducted multiple surveys of aerospace scientists, engineers, faculty, students, and librarians. A book that describes the project results was published in 1998.
1996 Election Study. During 1996, the Center conducted a study for Professor Robert Huckfeldt from the Indiana University Department of Political Science. This study, funded by the National Science Foundation, measured political communications during a presidential election campaign.
Indiana University Patient Outcome Research Team. This Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHQR) funded project examined the outcomes of patients in Indiana who had received total knee replacements. In 1991, the Center conducted a series of surveys of Indiana physicians. A panel of patients was surveyed periodically from 1992 through summer 1996.
Barriers to Health Insurance Study. In 1994, the Center conducted a survey of persons with chronic illnesses to determine the impact of such illnesses on the availability of health insurance. The survey was sponsored by the Indiana University Center for Law and Health and was funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
Access to Pools Study. In 1997, the Center conducted a survey of persons with disabilities and of swimming pool operators to assess the accessibility of swimming pools. This survey was conducted for Professor Edward Hamilton of the National Center on Accessibility at Indiana University.
Americans and the Past Survey. This national survey, funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities and conducted for the Indiana University Center on History-Making in America, was fielded in 1994. The survey focused on how Americans use the past in understanding their lives. Special interviewing and sampling techniques were designed to meet the specific needs of this survey. In 1998, Roy Rosenzweig and David Thelen published a book, Presence of the Past: Popular Uses of History in American Life, based on the study.
