Greetings and welcome to DIATOM-L My name is P. Roger Sweets, Assistant Professor of Biology at the University of Indianapolis. I am the 'owner' of the DIATOM-L list. This discussion list is managed by the LISTSERV program. I first set up this list at Indiana University, and it is still located there. The program will send you its version of things to remember, and this is mine. First of all, probably the easiest thing to remember as far as managing your subscription is this URL: http://listserv.indiana.edu/archives/diatom-l.html this is an interactive Web interface for managing your account, including signing off and setting your subscription to NOMAIL when you go away. Very useful. In fact, you can always search for such sites for any LISTSERV discusssion at: http://www.lsoft.com/catalist.html In truth, that is all you need to know, along with the cardinal rule: THERE ARE TWO EMAIL ADDRESSES OF NOTE: DIATOM-L@listserv.indiana.edu This address allows you to send a message to, well, frankly, basically everybody who does research on diatoms. Feel free to send such messages for valid uses. Suggested uses: - as a 'forum' for topic discussion - meeting announcements - job openings - grant announcements - listings of recent publications - situations where you wish to contact individuals for further private discussions: a general question about a taxa or location or a call for samples of a taxon, etc. It is important to remember that ONLY MESSAGES YOU WANT TO GO TO THE ENTIRE LIST OF SUBSCRIBERS BE SENT TO THE DIATOM-L ADDRESS. Not communications with me, or to find information about LISTSERV. This can be tricky as you can make the mistake of sending a private 'REPLY' to hundreds of diatomists, when you excitedly hit the reply button to a message from a colleague sent over the list. We are a very nice group, but please be courteous and careful. This is a forum for scientific discussion and information. We love a good argument, but keep it on an intellectual level. The members have broad latitude to post information about products they think are of general interest, if you are uncertain, please write me first. ************************* The other e-mail address of note is the listserv address where you can send commands to the program to change your subscription options: LISTSERV@listserv.indiana.edu As I said, you will find it more useful I think to use the Web archive, but if you like the older methods a full list of commands is below. ************************* You may find my diatom web page a useful site: http://www.indiana.edu/~diatom/branch.html Finally, you may contact me anytime with questions: P.
