The Undergraduate Program

EALC offers several major and minor programs for undergraduate students that varyingly emphasis language training and attention to East Asian societies and cultures. A great strength of the program is its range and depth. Students can focus on the language and culture of one country, but they also have the opportunity and are encouraged to gain exposure to aspects of each of the countries in the region and to general regional issues. Faculty teach courses that address topics stretching from the earliest days of East Asian civilizations to current problems facing peoples in the region. And because faculty come from a wide variety of disciplines, students are exposed to East Asia from multiple theoretical and topical perspectives. In addition to education on the IU campus, students are also encouraged to study abroad in the People's Republic of China, Taiwan, Japan or Korea.
