Asia educates half of the world's children. What those children learn in school will determine our collective global future. Study spring semester with two leading scholars on Japanese and Chinese education and then learn firsthand about sweeping educational reform in Japan and China by joining us in May for a 2-week trip to Tokyo and Beijing.

The course and trip are supported by the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures and the East Asian Studies Center, through a grant from the Freeman Foundation.

Requirements

Students must register for and attend the 3-credit course “Education Reform in China and Japan,” which they can register for under EALC 497 or EDUC F401, in order to participate in the study tour May 9-25. 

Students will pay the $800 cost of the study tour, the costs of lunches and dinners on the trip, and all other expenses (such as personal miscellaneous costs) not covered by the Freeman Foundation. 

Application

Application materials include an application form, a short essay, and one letter of recommendation from an Indiana University instructor.

To apply, print out the application form, complete it, and submit it along with the essay and letter of recommendation by October 11, 2004.

Students registering for EDUC F401 should put application materials in the labeled box in Education Bldg. #4228

Students registering for EALC 497 should submit application materials to Prof. Rubinger, Goodbody Hall #345

Selected applicants will be interviewed beginning October 18, 2004.
