Taylor Atkins is an Assistant Professor of History at Northern Illinois University and the author of Blue Nippon: Authenticating Jazz in Japan (Duke University Press, 2001). He is currently working on Japanese colonialism in Korea and editing a global history of jazz. A comparative comment will be provided by Richard Bauman, Distinguished Professor of Folklore, Professor of Anthropology and Communication and Culture and Director of the Research Center for Language and Semiotic Studies, Indiana University.
