As an old man named Moon Dok-bae dies in Seoul, his son, a movie director, tries to honor his father's last wish that he be buried on Kwisong Island, where he was born and lived until the early 1950s. To his surprise the islanders won't permit the burial, won't even permit the funeral boat to dock. His friend Kim Chul, the son of Kwisong's late schoolteacher, tries to mediate. The real story unfolds in flashbacks, as national division is revealed in this story of how Moon Dok-bae was expelled from the Community and how Moon's revenge on the island caused wounds that have never fully healed.

Korean with English subtitles. 1993. Kwang-su Park. 102 mins.

The film will be proceeded by a brief introduction and followed by a discussion session led by Ms. Jeeyoung Shin, an IU graduate student from South Korea.
