EASC Graduate Student Fellowships

The East Asian Studies Center offers two graduate fellowship programs: Title VI Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships for the study of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean and the Society of Friends of Korean Studies (SOFOKS) Graduate Fellowship for Korean studies.

Additional fellowship information is posted on the bulletin boards outside of EASC's main office, Memorial Hall West 207 and the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures, Goodbody Hall 255. The GradGrants Center, located on the 10th floor (room 1052E) of the Herman B. Wells Library also provides free, centralized information on fellowships, internships, and grants as well as consultants to assist students with online grant database searches and grant proposal writing.

Title VI Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships (Summer and Academic Year)

FLAS Fellowships are awarded to universities to support graduate training of students who intend to make their careers in college or university teaching, government service, or other fields in which knowledge of foreign languages and cultures is required. The availability of FLAS awards in academic year 2008-09 is contingent upon receipt of grant funding from the U.S. Department of Education.

Summer 2008 and 2008-09 academic year FLAS Fellowships for the study of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean are potentially available through two Indiana University centers: the East Asian Studies Center and the Center for the Study of Global Change. FLAS awards from the Center for the Study of Global Change will be given only to students whose academic program and/or career objectives are inter-regional or international in perspective, so applicants whose field of study and/or career goals have a global component should apply for fellowships through both centers.

Application can be made for both academic year and summer FLAS Fellowships, but a separate application must be submitted for each.

FLAS Fellowships include:
• Tuition fee remission
• Academic-year stipend of $15,000 (estimated) and/or summer stipend of $2,500 (estimated)
• Enrollment in graduate student health insurance program (academic year recipients only)

Eligibility requirements:
• U.S. citizens and permanent residents
• Eligible modern East Asian languages: Chinese, Japanese, and Korean (priority for those studying at 3rd- or 4th-year level)
• For academic-year fellowship, must take one language course and one East Asian studies course each semester
• For summer fellowship, program of study must be at least 6 weeks long and provide at least 120 contact hours at the 4th-year level and at least 140 contact hours at lower levels. Tuition and fees must not exceed $4,000.

Additional requirements pertain to the use of a FLAS at an overseas institution; if applying to use a FLAS overseas, please contact easc@indiana.edu.

For detailed information and to apply online, please visit the IU FLAS web site.
