Title:

“An Introduction to the Music of Korea

 

Abstract:

The goal of these lessons will be to introduce the Fifth Grade students to the Music of Korea.  Students will learn some facts about Korean music; they will learn to sing a Korean song and will play a Korean percussion piece. 

 

Description:

This lesson plan will be designed for use in the Music classroom only—it will not be performed outside of my room, though students will be encouraged to share their new knowledge with family and friends.

 

Time Frame:

Each class meets for 1 - 35 minute period per week, so this lesson will be taught in a

3-week unit.

 

Curriculum Goals:

The Curriculum goals are met by means of…

Integration of Social Studies, Reading, Math, Writing and Language Arts.

 

Expected Student Outcomes:

Students will know how to sing a Korean Folk song and they will be able to play a Korean percussion piece.

 

Standards:

The National Standards addressed by this unit will include:

2)      Performing on instruments alone and with others

5)      Reading and notating music

6)      Listening to, analyzing and describing music

7)      Evaluating music and music performances

8)      Understanding relationships between music, the other arts, and

Lesson Activities:

 

Lesson One:  (35 minutes)

Materials – “Share the Music” Grade 5 book, pp. 248 & 249; Korean Music Facts Handout; Teacher’s Music Rubric and Achievement Record; Student’s Journal Entry sheet

 

Introduce Arirang on pages 248 and 249 by having students listen to and conduct the song in a three-beat pattern.  Have a student read the text inserts and the Korean Music Facts Handout; then have students sing Arirang  (learning by echoing).  Practice the percussion parts written on page 249.  Students sing the song along with the recording and play the percussion simultaneously.

 

Teacher fills out Music Rubric and Achievement Record

Last 5 minutes of class, have students write a journal entry about the day’s activity

 

Lesson Two:  (35 minutes)

Materials –“Share the Music” Grade 5 book, pp. 248 & 249; Grade 3, p.345; Korean Music Facts Handouts; Video of Korean Ensemble (Summer Workshop); Drums and Gongs; Teacher’s Music Rubric and Achievement Record; Student Journal Entry form

 

Review (sing) “Arirang” from previous lesson

Review handouts of Korean Music Facts

Listen to and discuss the “Ornamented” version of Arirang

Show video of the Korean Percussion Ensemble

Introduce “Basic Semaci Rhythm (Handout)

Practice percussion rhythms with the entire class and transfer to drums

Have various students practice with the drums

Teacher fills out Music Rubric and Achievement Record

(If extra time) play percussion with Arirang

Last 5 minutes of class have the students write a Student Journal entry

 

Lesson Three: (35 minutes)

 

Materials - “Share the Music” Grade 3, p.345; Teacher’s Music Rubric and Achievement Record; Drums and Gongs; Student Self-Assessment forms and Pencils

 

Sing Arirang with percussion – allow each group to perform

Teacher fills out Music Rubric and Achievement Record

Pass out Student Self-Assessment forms, have students fill them out and pass them in

 

Assessment Plan:

In order to determine what students have learned, I will observe students playing the Drums and Gongs.  I will utilize my Music Rubric and Achievement Record and my student self-assessment and journal entry forms (these will be passed in to me for evaluating).
