Welcome!
This issue of the EASC Newsletter is the first to be solely web-published.
The web format gives us the freedom to include more complete coverage
of topics that interest you. This issue includes an interview with Taiwanese
historian Hsiung Ping-Chen, previews of upcoming events, and a story
about Bloomington educators learning how to bring East Asia into the
classroom. As always, the newsletter begins with a letter from our Director,
George Wilson. The regular sections on faculty, student, and alumni
news are, of course, also included.
We realize that becoming a web-published newsletter requires a transition
period, for both the Newsletter and its readers. We welcome suggestions.
Do you have an event that you think should be covered? Do certain sections
of our Newsletter leave you thirsting for more? Do others always remain
unread? Please e-mail your ideas and comments to rmenyhar@indiana.edu,
or call EASC at (812) 855-3765.
A "lifetime subscription" to the Newsletter is available
to anyone! If you or someone you know is interested in being added to
the EASC Newsletter subscription list, click on Subscribe
to submit your information and you will receive e-mail notification
of the publication of each quarterly issue.
A New Newsletter, A New Name
Long known simply as East Asian Newsletter or East Asian
News, we have decided that it is time to christen the newsletter
with a reader-chosen name that better reflects our goals.
Creative minds are encouraged to submit entries that reflect the EASC
mission: to promote education and awareness about East Asia, at IU,
in the Midwest, and throughout the country. If you have an idea for
a name that reflects this focus, submit it to rmenyhar@indiana.edu
or write a note to:
Russell Menyhart
Memorial Hall West 207
1021 East Third Street
Bloomington, IN 47405-7005
Just in case self-satisfaction isn't an attractive enough incentive
to submit a suggestion, the winning entry will receive an EASC totebag
and coffee cup. Be sure to include your address and phone number
with any entry so that we can contact the winner. Deadline for entries
is November 30, 2001.
