The East Asian Studies Center is again sponsoring a one-week, intensive summer workshop on East Asia from June 28 - July 3, 1998. Aimed at social studies teachers, "Teaching East Asia in the Middle School," will cover geography, history, current events, culture and language.
Lectures by IU area experts will provide the foundation for the development of curricular materials by teacher participants, who will design materials relevant for the middle school classroom with the help of curriculum consultants.
The area experts and curriculum consultants include IU faculty members Jeffrey Wasserstrom (HIST) and Roy Shin (SPEA), as well as Claudia Crump, an IU Southeast professor emeritus of education and a consultant for GENI, Geography Educators Network of Indiana, and Patrick Rea, also of GENI.
Now in its third year, the workshop continues to be popular among middle school teachers interested in bringing facets of East Asia into their classrooms. Previous workshops have resulted in the publication of two books of lesson plans by EASC. For more information about the books from the 1996 or 1997 workshops, or for more information about the 1998 workshop, please contact EASC Outreach Coordinator Marian Young at (812) 855-3765, or mhyoung@indiana.edu.
