Over 35 percent of Indiana manufactured exports to Japan in 1995 were chemicals products. Indiana chemicals exports to Japan have increased from a low of $231 million in 1991 to over $326 million in 1995 -- a 41 percent increase. Indiana manufacturers of sophisticated instruments (including medical devices), primary metals, food products, and transportation equipment each exported more than $80 million of their products in 1995. Of that group, primary metals has shown the greatest variability. Primary metals exports were $163 million in 1991 -- only to crash to $23 million two years later.
