306. Library Housing the Tripitaka Koreana Haeinsa Temple

Choson. 1488, HaDchon County, South Kyongsang Province

Two long buildings located behind the main shrine at Haeinsa Temple house the wood-blocks of the Tripitaka Koreana, the Buddhist texts. The wood-blocks were original-ly carved in the 11th century but were destroyed by the Mongol invaders. They were recarved in the 13th century and transported for storage at Haeinsa Temple. The temple itself burnt down in 1817 but the library buildings, built in 1488, were saved, along with the Tripitaka Koreana wood-blocks.
