309. Suwon Sung (The
Walls of Suwon) Choson, rebuilt in 1867, National Treasure No. 223, Seoul. The Choson King Chongjo (r. 17-1800) ordered the con-struction of the walls surrounding the city of Suwon, south of the capital of Seoul, after he had his fatherfs tomb site moved to the Suwon area The elaborate walls were mod-elled after the walls surrounding the capital but used advanced construction techniques which enhanced construc-tion efficiency. The walls featured advanced canons, making them the most modern defense facilities found during this era. Click here to return |
