712. Ch'oyongm u, The Dance of Ch'oyong

This dance originated in Kyongju as a solo dance in the ninth century and over time developed first into a duet and, by the early Choson period, into a quintet performed to exorcise evil from the court before the New Year. Five male dancers wear masks and brilliantly colored costumes as they take turns performing separately and then join in unison. The music is based on a Shaman song as is the content of the dance itself.
