206. Brahmadeva and Virupaska Murals in the Chosadang Hall of Pusoksa Temple

Koryo, 12th-13th century, Approximately 205x75cm each

These paintings are two of six fresco paintings originally painted on the exterior walls of the Chosadang Hall in 1377. Both in terms of artistic content and their state of preserva-tion, these paintings are the finest examples of extant Koryo era painting. The Brahmadeva is a slender beautiful aristo-cratic woman figure while the Virupaska is a ferocious fig-ure who destroys evil.
