906. Chugugi, Rain Gauge

The world's first meteorological instrument to measure rain-fall was invented by Koreans in 1441. It was set on a stone stand, and rainfall was measured with a special measuring stick. Rain gauges were distributed around the country, and local magistrates were asked to report rainfall to the central government for future reference. The original gauges have been lost. The oldest rain gauge dates to 1770.
