Digital Transfers of Audio from K2600 or DAT to Digital Performer

Recording K2600 MIDI tracks into Digital Performer

1. Set the K2600 for Digital Output: MASTER->SAMPLE page. On the Sample page, make these settings...
   • Set Input to Analog (yup, that's right).
   • Set Rate to 44.1KHz.
   • Set Src to Int.
   • Set Mon to Off.
2. In Digital Performer, create a Stereo audio track. Choose New Stereo Bundle > S/PDIF 1-2 for its input. In the Setup menu, set Audio System Clock to S/PDIF. Record-enable the stereo audio track.
3. Play-enable any MIDI tracks you wish to record; disable any you don't wish to record. Play the sequence while looking at the meters in the Audio Monitor window (Studio menu). If your levels seem low, you can raise the Gain on the K2600 SAMPLE page.
4. Click on the Record button. This plays the sequence, and the sound made by the K2600 will be recorded into the stereo audio track.
5. Set Audio System Clock back to Internal!
6. Select all the audio tracks names you wish to bounce to disk, and use Start-End times in Edit bar (or drag in the Tracks Window) to choose the full legnth of the audio tracks. (A shortcut: double-click on the word "Selection" that appears to the left of the Start and End time boxes in the Tracks Window.) Make certain all audio tracks outputs are set to Analog 1-2. In the Audio menu, select Bounce to Disk with the following settings:
   • Channels: Split Stereo
   • Resolution: 16 bits
   • Import: Add to Soundbites Window
   • Source: Analog 1-2
7. File will appear in the Soundbites window. Select it, and in the Soundbites mini-menu, choose Export Selected Bites. Pick a location and set Format to "Interleaved Sound Designer II" or "AIFF Format."
8. Use either of the Toast programs to burn your stereo file onto an audio CD. In Toast Lite, click the Audio button, and drag the sound file into the Toast window. Then press the red record button to burn the CD.

Transferring from DAT to Digital Performer

1. Click on the DAT -> MOTU828 icon in the Dock. This runs a program that configures the ZSystems digital patchpay to route the digital outputs of the DAT into the MOTU interface.
2. Make a new Digital Performer project, and add a stereo audio track.
3. Set the input for the track to S/PDIF 1-2. (You may have to choose this from the New Stereo Bundle submenu.)
4. Record-enable the track.
5. In the Studio menu, set Audio System Clock to S/PDIF.
6. Load your tape into the DAT, and locate the section you want to transfer.
7. Press the Record button in Digital Performer, then press the Play button on the DAT machine. When you've recorded the sound you wanted, stop Digital Performer and the DAT.

   You'll have one stereo soundbite, already placed in the track you recorded.

8. Set Audio System Clock back to Internal!
9. Edge-edit the soundbite to trim off the stuff you know you don't want to hear.

   (If you wish, you can then select the name of the soundbite in the Soundbites window, and choose Compact from the mini-menu there. This will erase the parts of the sound file that are outside the soundbite time range. This is good when you're recording from DAT and have some dead space on either end of the file that you know you'll never need. Otherwise, it's best to leave your sound files alone.)
