K403/K503 Assignment 4: Sequence Editing

After this assignment, make sure these topics are famliar.

Take your sequence from Assignment 3, or create a new one to complete the following tasks.

  1. Open the Graphic Editor (click on the MIDI button in the Tracks window), and use the pencil tool to insert patch changes for some of the tracks. To get the pencil tool, choose it from the Tool palette (Studio > Tools menu), or type 'p' twice quickly. Choose Patch Change from the "pencil" popup menu at the bottom left corner of the window.
Then click in the narrow horizontal strip just beneath the piano roll.
Change back to the arrow tool (type 'a' twice quicly); click and hold on the patch change icon to get the menu of patches.

  2. Watch the video lessons about Digital Performer editing in Introduction to Computer Music: Volume One.
  3. Watch the video lessons about Digital Performer Region menu commands.
  4. Select regions and create crescendos and diminuendos using the Change Velocity command (Region menu). Select some notes, and then use the "Smooth" feature of this command.
  5. Explore other Region menu commands: Quantize, Transpose, Humanize, etc. Incorporate at least two Region menu commands into your sequence.
  6. Create meter changes using the Project > Modify Conductor Track > Change Meter command.
  7. Create changes in tempo, using the Project > Modify Conductor Track > Change Tempo command. Try one ritardando and one accellerando. Make at least one of these an exponential curve.

NOTE: To hear changes in tempo, you must set the Tempo Control (in the popup menu above the Tempo Slider) to Conductor Track.

  8. Try the Tap Tempo feature. Follow the steps below to set it up.

    1. Choose Setup > Receive Sync. Set the Type of sync to Tap tempo. For MIDI beat input data, set Source to PC88 and Event to the MIDI note of your choice (default is C3). This is the note you will tap to control the tempo. Set the desired number of countoff beats.
    2. Turn on Slave to External Sync in the Setup menu.
    3. To record your taps, record-enable the Conductor Track, and begin recording.
    4. When finished recording, turn off Slave to External Sync. Make sure that Tempo Control is set to Conductor Track, and play back the sequence.
  9. Continuous data is data that changes smoothly over time. This includes MIDI controller change messages — like volume, pan and modulation — as well as pitch bend and aftertouch. Below are some ways to insert continuous data. Make sure your sequence contains changing volume (controller #7), pan (#10), modulation wheel (#1) and some pitch bend.

  10. Back up your sequence to your Flash Drive and the CECM server.
