The diagram below illustrates the affect of two sampling rates on a single tone whose fundamental frequency is 3,000 Hz, but which also contains higher partials. Notice how the lower sampling rate is able to catch the fundamental frequency (indicated by the heavier blue lines) but not the higher partials. One would hope that when using such an imaginarily low sampling rate, all higher frequencies would be filtered out so they do not alias. Again, this demonstrates how the sampling rate determines the frequency response of a system.
