Welcome to the home page of Indiana University's department of English at Bloomington. The department is composed of some sixty faculty, 200 resident graduate students, and over 500 undergraduate majors. English is one of the largest departments in the College of Arts and Sciences and one of its best, typically ranked in the top twenty English departments in the country. In fact, some groups or units within the department are ranked more highly than that: a recent U.S. News and World Report survey, for example, ranked the department's faculty in "British Literature 18th Century to the Twentieth Century" as one of the top eight and our Creative Writing program is similarly regarded at the national level.
Much of this reputation is based on the outstanding quality of our faculty, to which we have added six wonderful colleagues this year. But part is also based on the fine journals the department produces: Victorian Studies, under the general co-editorship of Andrew Miller and Ivan Kreilkamp, the Indiana Review, editied by the MFA program, American Speech, edited by Michael P. Adams and College English, the country's premier journal in the fields of Rhetoric and Composition, edited by Culbertson professor of English, John Schilb. All of these periodicals provide rich opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students to gain experience in the editing, managing, and publication of journals; and thus represent yet another significant strength of our department.
OPTIONS & OPPORTUNITIES
The department offers a full range of courses at every level, from freshman composition to graduate seminars. We offer the following degrees: B.A., M.A., M.A.T. (Master of Arts in Teaching), M.F.A. (Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing), and Ph.D. In addition to our two semster academic year schedule, we offer evening courses, summer courses (in 6-week and 8-week sessions) and many correspondence and on-line courses through IU's School of Continuing Education.
- The department has its own Honors concentration (See Designing an English Major).
- The English department is a nationally recognized leader in teacher-training programs for prospective college and high school teachers.
- English has the largest number of undergraduate majors of all Arts & Humanities departments in the College, and is the most frequently chosen minor throughout the College.
- The English department also offers a wide array of faculty-student groups organized by academic interest. For information about these, simply hit the "Affiliated Groups" button and scan the wide array of opportunities for study in the area of your choice. Visit, for example, the "New Initiatives in 20th-Century Literature and Culture" site to review the new work of our faculty and doctoral students, to see the syllabi of recent seminars in the area, and to view other materials of interest. Visit the "Cultural Studies" site, the "Americanists" site, or the "Eighteenth-Century Workshop" for developments in these fields. The English department is proud to serve as a home for these exciting interdisciplinary initiatives, workshops, and interest groups.
Several English department faculty have appointments and teach courses in allied programs, such as Comparative Literature, the Honors Division, African-American, American Studies, Women's Studies, Jewish Studies, Cultural Studies, Film Studies, Medieval Studies, and others.
DIVERSE A ND UP- TO- DATE
Besides full coverage of traditional English subjects ("from Beowulf to Virginia Woolf"), the IUB English department provides a wide selection of courses in English lteratures from around the world, not only Britain (including Scotland and Ireland) and the United States, but also Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India, Africa, and the Caribbean. We also offer courses in creative writing in culture, gender, and performance studies, in film studies with a strong literary-cultural component, in the history, structure, and sociology of the English language, and in cyberfiction and the theory and practice of eletronic literacy.
INDIVIDUAL ATTENTION
Despite its size and the wide range of its offerings, the English department prides itself on its teaching excellence and attention to individual student needs. English department faculty have won more teaching awards than any other department at IUB. Furthermore, all faculty teach at all levels, from freshman to graduate; there is no "senior" and "junior" faculty. All faculty hold regular office hours whenever they are in residence. Directors, coordinators, and professional advisors are also always available in each of the department's four main administrative sectors: graduate, undergraduate, composition, and creative writing.
The academic year 2007-08 promises to be an exciting one, and we wish you good fortune in the coming year. If you would like further information on any of these or related issues, please do not hesitate to contact the department.
