| Proposed Hominoid Phylogeny: relationships
of hominoids based on the analysis of differences in banding
patterns of their chromosomes, and tracing their most likely
sequences of change. The specific chromosomes are represented
by their numbers (and X or Y) in the lines of ancestry, along
with the particular species sharing those chromosomes: Human
(H), Chimpanzee (C), Gorilla (G), and Orangutan (O). For example,
before the divergence of humans and chimpanzees took place, their
ancestor shared similar chromosomes 2p, 7, and 9 (human-chimpanzee
ancestor). Humans then diverged by fusion of chromosomes 2p and
2q into chromosome 2 and by a small pericentric inversion in
