William P. Malm, Berkeley,
October 26, 1974. Photo by
Peter Etzkorn. As SEM members are well aware, William P. Malm has been taking photographs at our annual meetings and other gatherings of ethnomusicologists for several decades. At the 1999 annual meeting in Austin, Dr. Malm generously agreed to allow his photographs to be shared with the public via the SEM web site. The photographs themselves are destined for the SEM Archives. Photos by others are included as noted.
In a letter accompanying the photographs, Dr. Malm wrote:
I was inspired to take pictures by Jaap Kunst's Ethnomusicology. In the rear of this first book using the term, Kunst placed pictures of many founding figures like Von Hornbostel at his desk or Ellis in academic robes. Most of the others were taken by Kunst in situ. I found that placing a face to the persons who wrote the early studies was very meaningful. I hope that some of these amateur pictures may serve a similar goal. What follows is a sample of the photographs. Eighty-five additional images are available on the main page. Thanks to Dan Neuman for helping to arrange this.--John Murphy
