June Friday, June 6, 2008 9:00a.m.-4:00 p.m., Kelley School of Business, Room 736 This workshop introduces teachers of grades 6-12 to the governmental institutions of the EU and to their history and relationship vis-à-vis individual member states. Topical discussions on EU policies and why and how the EU is relevant to the state of Indiana will be presented in the morning. The afternoon session will be devoted to a model European Council [PDF] exercise, with each teacher representing a particular EU member country. Studies on the theme of "Baltic Crossroads: Examining Cultural, Social, and Historical Diversity." One of the conference's main goals is to consider the role of the Baltic Sea Region in the European Union in an era of globalization. More than one hundred panelists from a variety of disciplines including linguistics, economics, history, sociology, religious studies, political science, anthropology, and education reflect an international community of scholars from Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Germany, Great Britain, New Zealand, France, Russia, Canada, the United States and other regions. The conference will feature a special workshop May 30-31 entitled "Ethnicity and Migration in the Baltic Region" to address questions of ethnicity and immigration in particular. Srikant Sarangi is a professor in language and communication and an associate research fellow in ICIC’s Division for Research on Health Discourse. He is the editor of TEXT, An Interdisciplinary Journal for the Study of Discourse and founding editor of two journals: Communication and Medicine and Journal of Applied Linguistics (with C.N. Candlin). Professor Sarangi’s research interests include discourse analysis and applied linguistics; quality of life and risk communication in genetic counseling; HIV/AIDS; telemedicine; general practice and palliative care; and intercultural pragmatics. The Midwest Model EU gives college students the chance to learn about the workings of the European Union through a hands-on simulation. Every year, more than 160 college and university students meet together in Indianapolis to decide the future of the European Union. Playing the roles of prime ministers & presidents, ambassadors & commissioners, ministers & diplomats, they spend two days haggling over policy, resolving disputes, building compromises, and charting the course of European unity. This year's keynote speaker will be Dr. Sinisa Petrovic, Professor of Law at Zagreb University School of Law, Croatia. His speech is entitled, "The Present and Future of European Union - EU, quo vadis?" and will be given at 9:30am to 10:45 am.
February Jason Beckfield is Assistant Professor of Sociology at Harvard University. His current work focuses on the consequences of European integration for economic inequality among and within the nation-states of Western Europe, and the impact of European integration on national welfare policy and differences among welfare states. Previously, Mr. Beckfield was Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Chicago.
Lecture: Grigore Pop-Eleches "Transitional Blues: Causes and Consequences of Post-Communist Political Alienation" Monday, February 25, 5:00 p.m. Woodburn Hall 218 Grigore Pop-Eleches is Assistant Professor of Politics and International Affairs at Princeton University. Professor Pop-Eleches's main interests lie at the intersection between comparative and international political economy with a particular interest in Eastern Europe and Latin America. His research has been supported by grants from the National Council for Eurasian and East European Research, and the Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies. He is an associate editor of World Politics.
