Faculty Travel Grant for Joint Activities with University Exchange Partners in EU, EU-Accession and EU-Candidate Countries

The EU Center of Excellence announces a €1200 travel grant for IU faculty to support joint research and teaching activities with university exchange partners in EU member, accession, and candidate countries or to further the establishment of links between Indiana University and university exchange partners in these countries. This program is not intended to be a vehicle for funding individual research travel or conference participation, but rather to promote joint research and teaching activities or to establish or expand institutional partnerships that have the potential to persist over time.

Applications for joint research and teaching activities related to EU policy studies are especially welcome on topics falling into these six categories:

  • the transatlantic relationship
  • EU enlargement
  • law and constitutional development in the EU, including the EU Constitutional Treaty
  • business, finance, and economics in the EU, including the European Monetary Union and the Euro-zone
  • EU agro-environmental policies, including the Common Agricultural Policy
  • the human dimension in the EU, including immigration, minorities, civil society, and gender

Proposals to further the establishment of links between IU and university exchange partners in EU member, accession, and candidate countries are intended to establish or expand institutional partnerships and to expand the range of IU participation in exchange activities with these European counterparts. Priority is given to proposals that create new and long-term opportunities for IU faculty members and that enhance faculty teaching and research in EU policy studies. Applications from faculty members at any IU campus are welcome.

Applicants may apply a broad definition of "policy studies" and “policy relevance.” "Policy relevant" does not refer solely to matters of current and intense concern to EU policy makers. Faculty from fields such as history; modern languages, literatures and linguistic policy; the humanities; popular culture; and other disciplines that may be outside the immediate purview of government officials are encouraged to apply, so long as the applicant explains convincingly why and how their interests are relevant at some level, even indirectly, to the formation of EU policy as a whole and how their interests may affect policy debates and research.

All applicants should submit a letter of intent including an itinerary or timeline for the proposed project, a proposed budget with budget narrative, and a current curriculum vitae. Proposals that detail at least a week or more of activities will be given preference. Applicants are strongly encouraged to identify matching or supplemental funds.

Applicants for joint research and teaching activities should also submit a letter of support from their European counterpart specifically stating the kind of research or teaching activities to be undertaken.

Proposals for university exchanges or linkages should submit a letter of support from the current or proposed exchange university partner in Europe outlining its objectives for the IU faculty member’s visit.

DEADLINE: 19 November 2007 A representative faculty committee, nominated by the Center’s co-directors and confirmed by the Center’s executive committee, will judge the applications and make awards. Announcement of awards will be made as soon as possible after the application deadline. Travel must be completed by 31 August 2008.

The review committee will also assign priority to projects nearing completion by younger faculty that are important for tenure, major projects in early stages of development that can be expected ultimately to attract substantial outside funding, significant projects nearing completion that show clear promise of early publication and of reaching a large audience, and proposals that encourage research collaboration between faculty and graduate students or between European and American scholars. Faculty Summer Curriculum Development Grant

The EU Center of Excellence will award one Curriculum Development Grant for summer 2008. The grant will be offered on a competitive basis in the amount of €4500 (dollar equivalent) before taxes plus fringe benefits.

Especially welcome are applications from the professional schools or topics falling into these six categories:

1. the transatlantic relationship
2. EU enlargement
3. law and constitutional development in the EU, including the EU Constitutional Treaty
4. business, finance, and economics in the EU, including the Euro-zone
5. EU agro-environmental policies, including the Common Agricultural Policy
6. the human dimension in the EU, including immigration, minorities, civil society, and gender

All applicants should submit a letter of intent, current curriculum vitae, and a letter of support from a relevant referee or colleague. Please also submit information about ALL internal and external grants and fellowships that you have received in the past three years. We ask grant recipients for 2008 to accept only one summer fellowship or summer grant for 2008. These grants are not intended for graduate assistance.

The Curriculum Development Grant could be used as Summer Session I salary for concentrated work on a curriculum project or as Summer Session II salary for enrollment in intensive language training (at IU or elsewhere) and work on the project. The EU Center expects that recipients will offer the new or revised course in their home department or school at least twice in the three years following the grant and that the course will then become a permanent part of the curriculum if it is successful in attracting students. It is our intention that new or revised courses developed through EU Center support will meet the degree requirements for undergraduate majors or master’s degree students from the home department of the grant recipient faculty member, as well as being appropriate and available for enrollment by EU studies undergraduate minors and master’s degree students.

Applicants should submit a letter from their chair agreeing that the proposed course will be taught on a regular basis in the future and will be cross-listed and open to students both in the home department and in West European Studies or the Russian and East European Institute; a proposal outlining in general terms the kind of disciplinary fields and subjects that will be included in the course, as well as a discussion of the appropriate level to be assigned to the course; a brief schedule of the applicant's teaching assignments, noting (with the chair's approval) when the new course will be proposed to the university and introduced into the curriculum, as well as how often the new course will be offered; and a representative sample of the instructor's past course offerings.

DEADLINE: 11 February 2008.
