WELCOME

This website began as a joint production of students in Prof John McDowell’s F351 Folklore of Student Life, Fall Semester, 2005, and grows each semester with new additions from new groups of students in a variety of classes. The goal is to create a site that captures the real flavor of student folklore at IU, gives an idea of the evolution of this folklore over time, and offers insights into the meaning and function of this folklore in the lives of students.

We present six varieties of lore (see buttons at right), so help yourself to a serving of your favorite fare. For each there is a historic part, drawing on research at the Folklore Archives (left bookmarks), and a contemporary part, drawing on current research among IU students (right bookmarks).

Please note that we do not endorse the content of this material, but rather present it as a true and honest reflection of student lore at Indiana University.

A word of thanks is due to Rachel González and Susan Henning-Harris for their invaluable help with this project.
