Master of Arts (MA) Track in Ethnomusicology
MA requires a minimum of 30 graduate credit hours including 24 credit hours of coursework (8 courses) within the department and up to 6 credit hours of project/thesis work, and reading proficiency in one foreign language.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Track in Ethnomusicology
PhD requires a minimum of 90 graduate credit hours including 30 hours of dissertation. A maximum of 30 credit hours of MA work may count towards the PhD. At least one minor and reading proficiency in two foreign languages are required. It is possible to obtain a Folklore minor within the department and/or to take Folklore classes towards track completion.

Minors and Cognates
PhD Minor in Ethnomusicology
The PhD minor in Ethnomusicology supplements degrees from other departments and schools at IU. Doctoral students may obtain a minor in ethnomusicology by completing 12 credit hours (4 courses) including two of the four core courses (F523, F714, F740, and F794) and two other courses chosen after discussion with adviser.

Cognate in Ethnomusicology
Master of Music students in the School of Music may obtain cognates in ethnomusicology by completing 6 credit hours. The courses should be decided after discussion with graduate adviser.
