Student Update
In April 1996, the department gave three awards for outstanding teaching among associate instructors. The winners were Debra Karr (Bloomington), Julie Baker (Carmel), and Cristina Martonffy (Hinsdale, Ill.). Each received a cash prize of $100 and a certificate of commendation. Awards also went to undergraduate and graduate students for outstanding scholarship. The Cannings Prize, given annually to an outstanding student majoring in French linguistics, honors the late Professor Peter Cannings. This year, the award went to Corinne Etienne (Scituate, Mass.). Bryan Fahrbach (Indianapolis) received the Lander MacClintock Award, which is given to an outstanding student, graduate or undergraduate, majoring in either French or Italian, alternating annually. MacClintock, who taught here for more than 40 year s in both languages, essentially established Italian studies at IU. Kristin Knox-Juel (Bloomington) and Bruce Anderson (North Tanawanda, N.Y.) received the Grace P. Young Graduate Award, given for overall excellence in literary studies on the graduate level. Karl Torke (Indianapolis) and Marcet Townsend (Los Angeles) were named winners of the Grace P. Young Undergraduate Award. Named for the late professor of French literature and civilization, the John K. Hyde Award is given to an outstanding undergraduate majoring in French. This year's recip ient was Sarah Nehrt (Columbus, Ind.). The Albert and Agnes Kuersteiner Memorial Prize, established in memory of Agnes Duncan Kuersteiner, Class of 1907, and her husband, Albert Kuersteiner, professor of French from 1897 until his death in 1917, is given to a sophomore or junior for excellence in both the spoken and written language. This year's winner was Jacquelyn Coutré (La Grange, Ill.). Debra Karr received the Mario Vangeli Award, given annually to a graduate student for excellence in Italian studies. This year the Mario Vangeli Award was also given to an undergraduate student, Salina Bussien (Bloomington). Kathryn Warrener (La Grange, Ill.) was awarded the second Carol Ann Brush Hofstadter Memorial Scholarship for Bologna-bound IU students. Carol Hofstadter was the holder of a BA in Italian and Art History and a master's in Library Science from IUB. This scholarship was created from donations from her family and her many friends across the nation and around the globe. Tisha Stima, Amy Scheaffer, Eve Zyzik, Jill Nace, Jill Thrasher, Michelle DeAngelo, Margo Huber, and Jennifer Randolph were recently elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Graduate student Colleen Ryan has been awarded a College of Arts and Sciences spring semester dissertation fellowship. The Weathers Fellowship for this spring has been awarded to graduate student Julia Davis. Mary Vogl, ABD in French literature, has received a $2000 research grant from the American Institute of Maghreb Studies for her project, "Postcards from Morocco: The Changing Dynamics of Self-Representation." She will be giving talks at the American Legation Museum in Tangiers and Sidi Ben Bellah University, Meknès, in May 1997. John Moses, a fourth-year graduate student in French linguistics, will be collaborating with Professor Barbara Vance on a project entitled "Subject clitics and the decline of verb-second in medieval French" to be funded by the department's F aculty-Graduate Research Program Fund.
The following students successfully defended their PhD theses in 1996: Anthony Everman, Sarah Jourdain, Sayeeda Mamoon, Molly Morrison, Roger Pieroni, Brigitte Porter, and Laurie Ramsey. Congratulations!
