French & Italian Alumni news R eginald Hyatte, BA65, MA66, is professor of French and comparative literature in the Department of Languages at the University of Tulsa in Oklahoma. In 1997, he published The Prophet of Islam in Old French: "The Romance of Muhammad (1258) and "The Book of Muhammads Ladder" (1264), and in 1994, The Arts of Friendship: The Idealization of Friendship in Medieval and Early Renaissance Literature, both with E.J. Brill Publishers, Leiden, the Netherlands. Norris Lacy, PhD67, is moving from Washington University in St. Louis to Penn State, University Park, Pa., where, as of this summer, he will be the Edwin Erle Sparks Professor of French.
Elaine Levitt, MA70, is vice president of the H. Levitt Co., a large wholesale hardware industrial supply company in Pittsburgh, Pa. One of her avocations, photography, has become "almost a second profession in my spare time," sh e reports, and several of her photographs of Pittsburgh riverscapes, towboats, coal barges, and the city skyline have recently been accepted by two art galleries in Pittsburgh. She is also in demand as a photographer at childrens birthday parties a nd finds this experience "absolutely delightful.". Virginia Jones, PhD83, teaches French at Case Western Reserve in Cleveland. She is active as an actress in Cleveland theater and as a drama critic as well. Her reviews of various Cleveland theatrical productions have recently received two awards for excellence. Karen Fresco, PhD83, is acting head of the French department at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. Alain Fresco, PhD81, is director of undergraduate advising at the same institution. Michèle Drouart (formerly Michèle Drouart-Fiske), PhD86, teaches at Murdock University in her native Australia. Michele Anderson, PhD90, teaches at Franklin College, where she also sponsors a French club and publishes Le Monde de Franklin, a magazine of French students writings. One of her goals is to interest her students "in stud ying abroad so theyll see there are people who speak the language in a real place." Before attending IU, Anderson was a member of the Peace Corps in Nigeria. Juliana Starr, PhD95, has a tenure-track position as coordinator of foreign languages and assistant professor of French at Christian Brothers University in Memphis, Tenn. She spent two years at the University of Southern Indiana in Evansvi lle, where this past year she was acting chair of the Department of Foreign Languages. Francesca Parmeggiani, PhD97, has been hired in a tenure-track position at Fordham University. Jan M. Mitchell, ABD, published an article titled "Une Etude de lironie dans Plaisir sacré de Mallarmé" in the prestigious journal Revue dhistoire littéraire de la France in 1996. Denis Augier, PhD97, is teaching at Indiana State University in Terre Haute. His recent publications include "LAlchimie dans le Songe de Poliphile" in Revue des Langues Romanes and "LOr et l&e acute;meraude: sur la signification alchimique de quelques personnages de Notre Dame de Paris" in Essays in French Literature. Curtis Schade, PhD84, was so pleased to hear that the department now has a student lounge on the sixth floor of Ballantine that he contributed $100 to spend as we please on the lounge. Jolene Vos, ABD, is currently a lecturer at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Mich. Molly Morrison, PhD96, has received a three-year assistant professorship appointment at Ohio University-Athens. Max Creech, ABD, again spent the summer in Vermont as assistant to the director of the Middlebury College Italian School. He teaches Italian at Duke University, where he also serves as coordinator of Italian language instruction. Charles Pooser, PhD97, is now teaching at SUNY-Stony Brook. Laura Salsini, PhD95, is currently teaching at the University of Delaware as a tenure-track assistant professor of Italian. Mark Friguglietti, PhD97, teaches Italian at Pennsylvania State University. Colleen Ryan, PhD97, is visiting professor of Italian at Purdue University. Patricia Zupan, PhD83, has been promoted to the rank of professor of Italian at Middlebury College, Vt. Angela Iovino, PhD83, was recently inaugurated president of the American University of Rome. She has asked Professor Lèbano to be a member of the advisory board that she has appointed to assist her in establishing a new master of ar ts degree in Italian linguistics and culture on the campus of that university. Agnès Fried, MA88, and her husband, Axel, who is in the diplomatic service, live in Germany with their children.
