International Applicants in Italian
Dear Prospective Student:
Thank you for your interest in our Italian graduate programs at Indiana University. Here you will find all of the necessary materials to apply to one of our programs. Note that no separate application is required to be considered for the financial assistance of an Associate Instructorship (AI position) or other department fellowship opportunities.
You may now apply online to the desired program by clicking this link: http://www.gradapp.indiana.edu. Select: "Apply Now ", create an account and then follow the instructions. Please fill in all applicable fields, including the "Departmental Questions" where, among others, you state whether you want to be considered for an IU fellowship or assistantship.
Your application will be first processed by the Office of International Admissions. In order for your application to be considered you need to have completed a 4-year undergraduate degree equivalent to the U.S. Bachelor’s degree.
Besides the application, you need to submit the following :
- Academic records (transcripts and diplomas) both in the original language and translated from every postsecondary school you have attended, whether or not you have obtained a degree.
- Three letters of recommendation on letterhead from major professors in your most recent degree program. These should be from individuals who are very familiar with your ability to do scholarly work. If you are not currently in school, a letter from a non-academic employer may be included as one of the three letters, but prospective students should be aware that such letters are usually less valuable to the Admissions Committee.
- Evidence of Financial Support, such as a letter from your bank, if you indicate that you can attend without financial support or with only partial support.
- Application fee
All paper application materials should be sent in duplicate to the Office of International Admissions, 300 North Jordan Avenue, Bloomington, IN, 47405. Please submit every item listed in the International Application for Admission, and apply as early as possible. It is important that you send a duplicate copy of all admission materials so that both the Office of International Admissions and the Department of Italian and Italian have a copy. Faxed materials will not be processed. An application can not be processed if the application fee has not been paid or if an applicant has neglected to arrange for some or all the official academic records to be sent.
The application deadline for international students who wish to begin their studies in September is the previous December 1st. For those who would like to begin in January, the deadline is the previous September 1st . Please note that AI positions generally only begin in the fall semester and not in the spring.
In addition to the guidelines outlined in the application, the Admissions Committee in the Department of French and Italian requests that you provide the following additional materials:
- One 300-500 word personal statement in Italian and English. It may contain your current goals, plans for your professional career, and reasons for selecting the field of study.
- Take the TOEFL exam and have the scores sent to us directly. (Required)
- Take the Graduate Record Exam, if possible, and have the scores sent to us directly by the testing service. While the Graduate School normally requires at least one GRE score above 600, exceptions can be made in cases of particular merit. (Optional)
- Provide a brief summary of any study or experience abroad.
- Provide details on any teaching experience
