french Club - Spring 2008

The French Club welcomes all those interested in speaking French and in learning about French and Francophone cultures. The core members of this club live in the Global Village Living-Learning Center, a dorm in Foster quad that houses international students, American students interested in international issues and in other cultures, and members of other language houses (Spanish, German, Japanese, and Russian). However, all members of the IU-Bloomington community are welcome to participate in French Club activities -- you do not have to live in the Global Village to get involved. Dr. Kelly Sax directs the French Club with the help of graduate assistant Jordi Teillard-Clemmer.

French House

Activities organized by the French House include:

French Conversation Table - Every Monday evening (except MLK Day), beginning January 14th, students of all levels, faculty, and staff are welcome to attend French Table at 5:00-6:15 pm in the Wright Quad cafeteria. All residents of the Bloomington community are invited to meet in this relaxed setting to speak French. Look for us at the back of the large dining hall, near the big Shakespeare quote. There will be a little French flag on the table.

Film nights - Several times a semester, the French House shows a film by a francophone director. These films are subtitled in English and are free to the public. For more information on the French Club Film Series click here.

Parties - Each year, the French house hosts a Mardi Gras party for all of Foster International, for the Department of French and Italian, and for all IU students interested in French. Last year's festivities featured international music, a swing lesson, a mask-making contest, a bead-stringing stand, and of course, great food, including the traditional king cake.

Other cultural events - French house members have hosted a reception for a group of business students visiting from Chartres, France, seen Paris Combo in concert at the Lotus Festival, hosted a panel discussion of former Peace Corps volunteers to French-speaking countries in West and North Africa, and participated in the English Conversation Club’s annual desserts-around-the-world extravaganza.

Leadership - In addition to activities centered around French language and culture, the French House offers opportunities for community involvement and leadership. Elections at Foster International are held each September.

If you wish more information about the French House and its activities, send your questions by e-mail to Dr. Kelly Sax or Jordi Teillard-Clemmer.
