special credit in french or italian

Please read the following statements before moving on to our Request for Special Credit Form.

Special Credit in French and Italian is awarded with an S grade. 100-level credit will be automatically processed after you have taken the placement exam. You will have to take the course into which you place in order to receive 200-level special credit. It is very important that you apply for 200-level credit before you graduate or transfer to another university or you will be charged for each credit hour of special credit.

French:

Italian:

Cost: Special credit will be free if you are enrolled in at least 12 hours on the Bloomington campus at the time you apply for the credit or in the semester prior to when you apply. Special credit that is not free will not be processed unless the student applies for it in the COAS Recorder's Office. Special credit will cost the same as tuition.

Self-Placement in French or Italian: If you place yourself or are placed by a language supervisor into a French or Italian course, you will need to apply for the resulting special credit. For example, you have some knowledge of French but did not test out of F100, you may decide to take F150. If you pass F150 with a D- or higher (only 200-level courses taken to validate credit need to be passed with a C- or higher), you may apply for special credit in F100. This credit will not automatically appear on the transcript, you must apply.

High School Students taking French and Italian: If you enrolled in French or Italian at another university while still in high school, you will be eligible for IU special credit if you take the IU placement test or an IU validation course. For example, as a high school senior, you took F200 through St. Louis University. When you matriculate at IU, you test into F200 or higher or you successfully take F250 at IU. You would then be eligible to receive special credit for F100 / F150. You must apply for this credit.

If you matriculated prior to Summer 1993: If you matriculated prior to Summer 1993, and have transferred credit in a foreign language from another university, you may not receive IU special credit in that language, even if you take the language placement exam here. You should take the test if you plan to continue in a language, but you will never be eligible for special credit at IU.

Please check your transcript in OneStart to see if you already have special credit. If you have any questions, please email Nancy Stoute, Undergraduate Secretary.
