G131 EXAMINATIONS

Objectives:

  • The course includes three on-line quizzes, five reflective questions (see Assignments) and four written examinations.
  • All types of assessments are intended to:
    • Test general comprehension of course topics and themes.
    • Examine understanding of oceanographic terms and principles.
    • Address knowledge of physical, chemical and biological processes in the ocean.
  • The on-line quizzes (accessed using oncourse) are also designed to:
    • Test comprehension of concepts from web-based exercises.
    • Apply understanding of concepts to new data sets.
  • The reflective questions (answered using oncourse) intended to:
    • Reinforce recognition and understanding of key concepts and principles
  • The written examinations are designed to:
    • Explore comprehension of the fundamentals of oceanography - concepts, interactions and dynamics. 
    • Evaluate abilities to describe and interpret key concepts using diagrams.
    • Assess use of maps to demonstrate spatial extant of oceanographic features.
  • The written exams will only include materials that have been covered in class.
  • None of the written examinations or on-line quizzes is intended to:
    • simply test memorization of oceanographic facts.

Written Examinations
Schedule and Contents:
  • The four written exams (all closed book) will cover the themes and chapters described in the class schedule, but this may change dependent on the timing of coverage of course topics.
  • The mini exams (each worth 4%) are scheduled for Tuesday, February 6 and Tuesday, April 3 during regular class time. Each exam will consist of:
    • 1/2 short answer questions, with an opportunity for bonus points.
    • 4 multiple choice questions, plus a bonus question.
    • Questions will be based on material covered by text chapters 1-4, and 9-11, respectively, or the themes address in class by that date.
  • The Mid-term exam (worth 8%) is scheduled for Tuesday, March 6 during regular class time. It will consist of:
    • 2/4 short answer questions, with an opportunity for bonus points.
    • 8 multiple choice questions, plus 2 bonus questions.
    • Questions will be based on material covered by text chapters 1-8, or the themes address in class by that date.
  • The Final Exam (worth 15%) on Thurday, May 3  addressing topics covered in text chapters 12-18 and cumulative materials (Chapters 1-18)
    • The exam will take place from 7:15 - 9:15 p.m. in GY126
    • Section A based on chapters 12-18
      • 3/5 short answer questions.
    • Section B integrative questions based on chapters 1-18
      • 2/3 short answer questions.
    • 20 multiple choice questions, plus 5 bonus questions.
  • Examinations can be taken only at the scheduled time or at the alternate time, excepting extenuating circumstances.
    • Communication about exam scheduling is critical.  It is a student's responsibility to provide adequate notification of scheduling conflicts.
    • Late arrivals will not be allowed extra time to finish exams.
