Objectives:
- The course includes three on-line
quizzes and two written examinations.
- Both types of assessments are intended to:
- Test general comprehension of
course topics and themes.
- Examine understanding of
oceanographic terms and principles.
- Address knowledge of physical,
chemical and biological processes in the ocean.
- The on-line quizzes (accessed using oncourse) are also
designed to:
- Test comprehension of concepts from web-based exercises.
- Apply understanding of concepts to new data sets.
- The written examinations are designed
to:
- Explore comprehension of
the fundamentals of oceanography - concepts, interactions and
dynamics.
- Evaluate abilities to describe and
interpret key concepts using diagrams.
- Assess use of maps to demonstrate
spatial extant of oceanographic features.
- The written exams will only include
materials that have been covered in class.
- None of the written
examinations or on-line quizzes is intended to:
- simply test memorization of
oceanographic facts.
Schedule and Contents:
- The three on-line quizzes
(administered
using oncourse) will focus on concepts and skills in the discussion
sessions
and web-based exercises.
- Each on-line quiz will take 30
minutes. They are designed to test what
you learnt from the exercises.
- Consultation with other students for
the timed on-line quizzes is NOT permitted.
- Your answers are intended to
represent your individual effort in completing the assignment.
- All your answers must be written in
your own choice of words.
- I reserve the right to award zero
points to students who submit identical answers to the written
questions, or require any student to take a supplementary test under
supervision if I have concerns that answers are independent.
- They are scheduled for:
- Thursday,
Sept. 15 - Tuesday, Sept. 20.
- Thursday,
Oct. 20 - Tuesday,
Oct. 25.
- Tuesday Nov. 22 - Tuesday
Nov. 29.
- Each quiz requires:
- Answers to 5 multiple choice questions.
- Answers to several (5 to 7) short
answer questions
related to interpretation of oceanographic data akin to those
considered
in the exercises.
- Answers may be submitted (via
Oncourse) anytime before 12:00 p.m. on the Tuesday
due date.
