TOPOGRAPHY OF THE OCEAN FLOOR (indiv.)

Introduction to Questions on the Topography of the Ocean Floor:

  • The questions are outlined in three separate tables:
  • Reminder: you should submit your answers via oncourse .

Topography of the Ocean Floor pt
Recognition of Topographic Features on the Seafloor
Examine detailed maps of seafloor topography for the appropriate areas of the ocean, naming the specific features that occur at designated locations.
1. What bathymetic feature is found at each of the following co-ordinates (latitude, longitude) on the map of the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans that lie West and East of South America , respectively?  HINT

Locations of Topographic Features on the Seafloor
Again examine the detailed maps of seafloor topography for the three designated maps of the ocean, recognizing locations of the specific topographic features.
Locate the following types of topographic feature on the map of Australia and the surrounding areas of the Indian, Southern and Pacific Oceans and give their co-ordinates (latitude and longitude).  You need designate only one location on each chosen feature.   HINT
2. (i) Identify one passive continental margin with shelf, slope and rise
1
(ii) Identify one abyssal plain (ocean basin)
1
(iii) Identify two separate deep sea trenches
2
Locate the following topographic features on the map of the Southern Ocean and give their co-ordinates (latitude and longitude).  You need designate only one location on each feature.   HINT
3. Identify three fracture zones
3
Locate the following topographic features on the map of the South Pacific Ocean and give their co-ordinates (latitude and longitude).  You need designate only one location on each feature).   HINT
4. (i) Identify one line of seamounts
1
(ii) Identify one mid-ocean ridge
1
(iii) Identify one triple point junction
