FLAS FELLOWSHIPS

The Center for the Study of Global Change promotes foreign language education by supporting graduate students focusing on global studies through the award of academic year and summer Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships. Given the global scope of the Center's programs, languages eligible for FLAS support are not restricted to any one geographic region of the world. Eligible languages for FLAS support through the Center for the Study of Global Change currently include Arabic, Chinese, French, Portuguese, Russian, Kurdish, Spanish, and others. The Center for the Study of Global Change will consider granting FLAS scholarships to study most any modern language, as long as the language instruction benefits and furthers research that is global in scope. FLAS Fellowships cover the cost of academic fees (and health insurance for the Academic Year FLAS award) plus a basic stipend for the academic year of $15,000 (estimated) or $2,500 (estimated) for the summer session.

Guidelines for Applications:

• To be eligible for an academic year award, an applicant must:
  • hold a bachelor's degree or equivalent and be admitted to a degree program in a graduate department or school at Indiana University by the beginning of the fellowship period;
  • be an American citizen or permanent resident, with career goals in teaching, public service, or in private or non-profit organizations.
• Priority for awards, based on U.S. Department of Education guidelines, will be granted to students studying less commonly taught languages, graduate students in professional schools; and/or graduate students taking advanced levels of foreign languages; the Center seeks to support graduate students whose academic program and/or career objectives are global in perspective.
• FLAS Fellowship recipients must undertake full-time study during the tenure of the award and be enrolled in formal language instruction in the language of the award as well as area or international studies courses.
• Deadline for submission of application and all materials relating to the application is February 1 with results of the competition announced in April.
