Greg was born and raised in Evansville, IN. He earned a B.S. degree in Chemistry from the University of Southern Indiana in 2002 and performed undergraduate research for Dr. Shelley Blunt on the synthesis of selected prenylated quinoline alkaloids. Having found that the characterization of his reaction products was the most enjoyable part of the research, Greg decided to become an analytical chemist and moved to Bloomington where he joined the Hieftje lab at Indiana University for his graduate studies. While in the Hieftje lab, Greg’s main efforts have been focused on the characterization of a new Faraday-strip array detector for mass spectrometry. The array detector, coupled to a Mattauch-Herzog double-focusing mass spectrograph, enables the simultaneous analysis of many analytes at sensitivities as good as or better than commonly used single-channel secondary electron multipliers. In addition to this work, Greg has also participated in the development and characterization of an atmospheric-pressure glow discharge as an ionization source for ambient mass spectrometry.
