RE: Title of Sponsor's Program, if available
Dear (contact name):
Why this sponsor?:
Use the sponsor information which you have acquired from the
GradGrants Center or other sources to demonstrate a clear connection
between the sponsor's objectives and your research.
Needs Statement:
Describe the need for the knowledge that will be gained from your
research. Make certain that the statement is tailored to reflect the
sponsor's viewpoint and values. If appropriate, cite current literature,
statistics, or relevant examples which help document the need. This
information helps to emphasize the problem (i.e., the gap in current
research).
Solution:
In a three- to four-sentence paragraph, describe your research and how
it could solve the problem you outlined in your "needs" statement. Be
certain to reiterate the importance of your research.
Uniqueness Statement:
Explain why you and your research are the "best" choices for this
particular program. Include your special capabilities and qualities.
Emphasize the quality of resources and the commitment of Indiana
University and your department. Stress that these aspects strengthen the
success of the project.
Closing:
State your intent to contact him/her again. For example, you may wish
to state, "I intend to contact you on (date/time) to discuss your interest
in my research project and the possibility of my submitting a proposal
application. In the meantime, please forward to me your program's
guidelines and instructions for proposal submission."
Respectfully,
